Theres a place out socburn/addington maybe Annex road i think, they make up chains for 4wds to suit your tyre size and can make ice breakers or whatever pattern you like. Sorry cant remember the name of the place.

Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

I know the chain man sells them but could be pricey compared to where CCS is talking about? Wouldn't mind a set for the 35's.

I found chains that size are very pricey even just for the crappy ladder style ones! So i got a set of second hand quick fit ladder style ones off trademe for about $15 and bought some heavy duty chain (about $60 from memory) and added in a big diamond pattern (much better on ice then ladder style and has much better lateral grip). Have run them on 33s up the ski fields over the last couple of years.

Does anyone know the legalities of chains...lets say the passes here in the South Is are clogged with snow and the road reports say 'chains essential' over Arthurs or the Lewis.

If you rock up to the roading gangs with your perfectly good 4wd tyres but WITHOUT chains - can they stop you from going any further?

Likewise when they say 'chains must be carried' - do they check you're carrying them?

Just wondering..i've done that many winter trips into the MaCaulay or over to the Coast without chains. I work around Akaroa during the week and a couple of winters ago they were stopping cars in Cooptown because of snow and the road was closed. They waved me through and I ended up pulling campervans back onto the road just passed the Hilltop summit without chains etc.

They should check them but you'd be a plonker to try the passes when its snowing without chains.

Its quite entertaining watching Subaru drivers that think they have 4WD and can go anywhere without fitting chains.

Good snow tyres are something like a BFG All Terrain when they are new. And don't spin your wheels on snow as that makes it slick!

LOL...I used to drive the Lake Lyndon road when there had been a big dump, one time I started from the Coleridge end and about 2-300m before the Porters Pass end I came across a subaru which had drifted off the road, should have seen their faces light up when I came around the corner towards them.

My understanding from a mate at Fulton Hogan, is legally they can stop you. Depending on who you get, depends on whether they actually will.

Also even with 4wd + lockers + good tyres, you still sometimes need chains.

Ok well this is what I got from CPS.

He did not have diamond 'V bar' type chains available for tyres 33" and above although they are available UPTO 33" in both diamond & ladder 'V bar' pattern and normal link type pattern.

He recommends 'Ladder' type chains as being more aggressive than the diamond pattern and linked chain being way more comfortable to drive on as opposed to 'V bar' chains.

He DOES have ladder chains in V bar configuration available for 33x12.5x15 at a cost of $290 per pair (not sure if excl or incl of GST)

And 35x12.5x15 at $300 per pair.

Recommends 1pr chains and on the front wheels for obvious reasons.

I'm sure the ORE courier service could help out, otherwise use parcel post from the post shop. I had a steering guard sent from Auck to Wgtn by post, weighed just under 20kg and only cost $24.

For my ladder chains I bought an extra set of the rubber bungee things so I could make them tight on both my simexes and road tyres.

it seems obvious but when you buy some, get some practice fitting them in your driveway where its dry and warm. I do a lot of pass driving in winter for work and use chains a lot. Every time there is a composory chain fitting area I spend 2 mins chucking mine on and then about 30 mins helping everyone else who have no idea. I also like to drive a couple of hundred meters up the road and then re-check/tighten them if needed. I've had a set of cheap ones come loose (from broken links) and its not pretty on the road when your chain is flying round and round into your pannel and inner gaurd. Lucky it was the work car and i had warned work not to buy cheap shit chains.

I also like to carry a tarp so you can kneel on the snow without getting soaked and when it's really bad I pull the abs fuse. The amount of nose to tails up the ski fields every week that are caused from not being able to lock your chains onto the ground when you start slipping from abs is unbelivable. You can have the best ice breaker chains in the world but if you can't lock your wheels when you want the mto bite in then its a waste of time.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

When I bought chains (3 years ago) I was recommended to fit them to my rear tyres not the front.

Depends what you are doing, on the road like ski fields, front wheels as downhill and steering is ya biggest safety issue.

Off road if just putting one set on I will put them on the rear as they are much more effective there.
