which winch should i get?

Post by crazyclark31 »

need to get a electric winch for the new truck as it is an auto.(lwb low roof safari)
Have been looking at the runva winches on trademe and have come across these two
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =391138557
and
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =391373305

I'm kind leaning towards the 9500lb on as it has a 10hp(8kw)
motor so would think it has a bit of line speed. Problem is the gear ratio is pretty high at 110:1
The 12000lb one only has a 5.5hp(4.2kw) motor but a good gear ratio of 233:1 problem is it would be blimmin slow and can't stand it when waiting on a slow winch to do its thing  .

as i've done a couple of comps now i kinda like a bit of rope speed but will the 9500 handle a big truck stuck in a bog?esp with that ratio.Am thinking the high output motor will help with this tho.
Also would the standard crappy safari alt handle that kinda drain? Truck has two new 700cca bats
Man i wish could put my pto on instead!!!!

Go for the 1200 man, it may be slow, but i dont think a 9500 will cut it.

How much are you prepared to spend?
I'm picking up a high speed 17,000 lb winch tomorrow that might be on interest to you. Once I have it I'll be pulling it apart to check it out and then basically testing it to destruction ie doing some winch comps with it. And I think you'll be suprised at the price.
I'll come back to you tomorrow with more details as I'm not 100% of all the specs etc yet.

Well am looking around the $800 but push come to shove will go upto $1000. Will be keen to hear what you think of the winch. Can i ask what brand it is?

go for the 9500 as its fast on the easier stuff and double purchase on the heavy stuff easy realy

and even in a double purchase its faster then the 12000 and is now somewhere around 17000

I'd guess one of these...?

Have you sold your SWB Mike? You really should just put the manual into the LWB!

Can't go on of those as i'm 24volt unless i did a complete stand alone 12volt system but to much pissing around

Nah haven't yet. Bit surprised with that as its priced cheap. gota guy from hokitika keen on it.getting a compression test and leak down test done before he commits.

Mate i'd love to put the manual in it but like sleeping inside(Would well and truly in the dog box if started swapping things over)

Ahh that interesting. Will have to see what darinz thinks of it once he's tested it. Bloody long though

Prob a dumd question but if i wired two alternators in parallel would it work the same as one high output one?

The one I have isn't going to be in the $800 to $1,000 range, more like double that but they do have single motor winches in that price range.
I'll do a lot more on it this weekend but basically, twin 6.8hp motors, high speed, factory cooling lines into the motors. It also appears that there is a factory remotoe freespool option.

The winch is a Trail Max.

at a guess the answer would be no as unless they were on seperate systems then. as one would end up doing all the work whilst the other would be reading the voltage from the first alt and sit there doinbg nothing

on the other hand i could be completely wrong, it would not be the first time mind you

Was thinking if i hooked them up together at the same place in the loom then they should both read the same and therefore be under the same load.
Would love to get a high output one but with them at $650  and us on a single income is bit outa price range. Can get standard one cheap as though hence the parallel idea.
