80 series Landcruiser 2WD conversion

Post by jetskiwi »

A mate wants to know if he can turn his fulltime 4WD 80 series into a rear wheel drive only, by changing to free wheel hubs and using the centre diff button to turn on 4WD when needed.
Is this possible, or will it just burn out the centre diff?

It works sort of. I did it before I got the marks kit to do it properly. The thing is with the hubs in the free position he will have to have the centre difflock engadged all the time anyway, otherwise trap for young players the vehicle wont go anywhere even in gear because the centre diff, like any open diff will transfer the power to the lightly loaded side which in this case is now the front end because its not driving the front wheels anymore. This is why you need the difflock engadged. The front driveshaft will obviously still turn front diff internals now at the same speed as the rear, it just wont be driving the front wheels which is why I used to remove the front drive shaft to avoid spining front diff internals needlessly also and put drive shaft back in when I needed it (a real pain). To answer your question it had no halm on my centre diff. Cant recommend the marks part-time kit enough thu. P.M suzzolla and see if he has any left.

Simple answer = YES it can be done and it works fine

Dont bother with aftermarket hubs, go for factory toyota (AISIN) hubs off a solid axle hilux (or 60 series cruiser?) and they are plenty strong.

Thanks for the advice and the link to the Marks kit.
Sorry sibainmud, I did try a couple of searches first but didn't get it.
