Have a mate who is looking at putting 10mm Dyneema Winch Rope on his PTO winch and wants to know how much he can fit on the drum before he will run into problems??

Emailing him is like watching paint dry, he takes ages to reply..........................

I'm still using wire, but I recomend that you don't fill drum completely. Your rearly (if ever) winching straight ahead to enable you to wind rope on evenly. It always seems to be overfill on one side, and only a little on other side. If you want length, buy an extra piece as an extension.
If you break it... build it stronger.

I could have fitted another 10m with enough room left for bunching up when winching easy

Check eBay, at the moment they have 10mm X 30M at $1 reserve. I'm winning an auction for $50 Aussie. Including $40 postage, it is still a great price at $120....

Like Jeremey says you dont want too much rope on the drum or you end up with too much side bunching and the nissan drums are knowen to break the sides off when they get too much overloading, also your best pulling is down in the lower layers on the winch. You need to get a few bits of old broken winch rope to make up into various extn lengths when you need longer winching, I think I've got a 5m, 10m, 17m and 30m which is my next winch rope when my current one breaks, the eyes are easy to loop onto the bits of rope

35m of 10mm on a standard nissan drum, you wouldnt want to fill your drum up any more than that

The other thing to think about is the factory drum has a habit of blowing the side out when over filled with rope. Synthetic rope flatens under load which creates massive side loads that the ali drum don't handle well. Less than 40m seems to be right but any more will see a higher risk of breaking the drum.
But yes you can fit more if you want!

had a good look at my spare drum, its a major engineering job to reproduce it in steel so not rushing in to build one
