Looking at ordering some stuff from the U.S of A

Post by T-Boon »

Looking at getting an order from http://budk.com/. to replace my bush hackers/clearers.

They do heaps of machetes, hatchets and all sorts of random stuff. (oh and gas masks...)

but... They need an order of $1000 before they ship overseas. Im sitting at about $350 as of now. and waiting on how much shipping will be, hopefully free for an order of that size.

Is anyone after some stuff, seams about half the price of stuff here, and pertty good quality.

Alternately does anyone know any website of equal qulity that does export ?

If you can find a site that will ship with orders under the 1000 mark, do a few small orders and pay extra for freight, otherwise you will get stung with GST when the stock arrives in NZ. I do little orders and keep them under $400, I've been told that is their threshold for holding for GST on imports.

It does pay to stock up on all the goodies with our $$ being so good against the green back

would you even be allowed to import some of that stuff

looks pretty deadly to me, but bloody cool

I thinks theres strict laws on the importation of knives etc, you may wanna check up, otherwise you could find your bought and paid for items confiscated :(

just a thought dude

You could use http://www.buyusa.co.nz/
Basically its a holding house in the USA.
They then post it on to you.
Can send it bits or one hit.

skid is correct, there are strict rules. If they are not allowed then you won't get a fine or a warning you will just loose your items without a refund.
have a look at this site as well

What cant i ship ...

Knives: Any knives excluding cutlery for utilitarian use such as: A) customary household use; B) personal convenience; C) professional, trade, commercial or other employment activity use; D) for use for a craft or hobby; E) outdoor sports such as hunting and fishing; F) scouting activities.

You might be able to wrangle a few macheties, however the nunchucks and Raptor Claw Hand Spike might be a bit trickier.

And with the exchange rate at 0.9238 $350 works out at $378
No time like now !

Missed this one, some dealers and e bay traders will only ship to local addresses ie USA / Canada / Mexico.
Or they charge an arm and a leg for International shipping.

I'm still waiting on my gears from Utah. I paid about $720, so how does that work with GST? I haven't heard anything about that yet haha

Will depend on how they were shipped as to how long they will take.
Supplier should have advised you the details and the consignment or tracking number.
Air should be no more than a week, FedEx, DHL,TNT and such like should be within a few days as they are usually operating courier service.

The freight agents in NZ will contact you (by phone if you provided phone details otherwise by letter and this holds it up further) when they have the documents and clear them through customs on your behalf. Then you pay them their fees for doing it and also the GST owing before they release the goods. GST is paid on the amount of the goods as well as the freight/shipping cost.

You will probably get a letter from customs advising you to pay GST before they will release the goods to you, just hope you are one of the lucky ones that they just slide past.

I've paid GST on shocks from Oz that had a declaration of $450Au, and had a package come from the states for $700 that came straight to us. Game of chance really, our old neighbour who worked for customs said if they had to hold onto and collect tax from all packages that came through customs they would need a city sized collection area so they keep some, let some slide.....but try to get all packages over $400....

Nice piece of info that I heard last week was that we do not pay GST on any product from China, something to do with the free trade agreement. I don't know how true that is but I will find out, would be good to do a bulk deal on parts from them, like winch rope etc..... :D

Thats what suprised me, i know about tariffs and quotas for bulk lots etc but never even realised there was GST on "consumer imports". I emailed lowrange today and asked them what the deal is with tracking because last time i was given a tracking number and it arrived in a few days, this time it has been almost two weeks and haven't heard a word. Looks like i'll be one of the unlucky ones at this rate :|

Dont do it, my dynex overbraid that I brought 6 years ago and gave to beer cruiser 2 years ago coz I thought it was at the end of its life is still doing tuff truck comps and hasnt broken, the chinese runva rope I put on my 40 series has done 16 winches and broken 3 times leaving me with about 8m on the drum now, I put it on in the last stage at Gwavas last year and did one hard winch and its been snapping like shoelaces ever since

I brought 2 of them and I dont think I'll even bother putting the second one on the truck, its cheap initial cost but costs more in the long run :x

Yeah, my last order sat in customs for 3-4 weeks before they searched it and released it. Had to pay GST, but that was expected.

I have had Trailgear items take from between 6 days and 9 weeks. one parcel seemed to leave LA and never arrive.. till it just showed up on my door step.
Had 2x parcels from a dude on ebay turn up in under a week this month.. I try to specify US postal service when possible. cheap and they always arrive, never had one stopped for GST regardless of value
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Yeah my package is USPS so hopefully it'll be no problem. My goal was to have new gears in the suzuki by the end of summer, thats starting to look unlikely

I got a supercharger in a couple of weeks ago, it got stopped buy customs, its the first time ive had anything opened buy them.
The guy I was talking to at customs at auckland airport was saying that at present they are having a massive crackdown on stuff coming in from the states due to false declarations.
Cause the limit is only $400 usd and i was a tiny bit over he let me off with a warning as long as i dont do it again

So no ls2 for me :(

People whine that the GST is because the government and local businesses miss out on profit when we buy offshore; well i don't know about you but all the stuff that i've bought from America isn't made in NZ...
