I have discovered that there has been a lot of water find it's way into the gearing side of the winch and the grease was very hard, brown and exposed metal rusted.
After struggling for a hour or two I have managed to clean all the grease off all parts and have discovered a few missing/damaged parts.

what I am starting with.

remains of part #17

rust

I will scrub all rusted parts with steel wool before re-assembling them.

clutch assembly

this is being rotated on re-assembly to place the clutch lever in the vertical position rather than the stock horizontal position.
seems there is a part missing to prevent the gear from rubbing on the housing here.

on the bottom of this section there was one of 6 springs in the lower hole, this has completely rusted away.

I have emailed Runva for replacement parts so will strip out the armature end while I wait for them to arrive.
What grease should I use to re-pack it with and how much do you use?
I also wonder should there be a "O" ring go in the slot where the clutch ring slots into the inner housing to prevent water ingress, parts 26 and 29?
It seems to me there is plenty of places for water to get in.
More pictures and progress as I go.....
