LOL Another Project or THREE

Post by De-Ranged »

Not like I don't have enough on my plate..... but I guess projects are like bourbons - they are more fun, the more you have
Reason there's three is, I've got three mates all with hilux's of one sort or other and they all want to do RUF and X-over so I'll do all the work in tripliket (or how ever its spelt)

Right first one is Wingnuts 350 chev/Hilux double cab
Moving the rad out back onto a deck I made for him a while back oh and going to a big alloy one 8)
EFI throttle body & HEI ignition (another mate is sorting this)
Rear up front suspension
X-Over steering
IFS hub swop
Shave and brace the front axle
and patch up a few little bits here an there for cert

We got a couple of hrs on it Sat arvo
Image
Managed to get a few things out of the way so I can do a bit of work on this week

Heres a shot of the rear deck.... still undecided where to put the rad, along one side or in next to the cab
Image

...

Right Rotordogg here ya go...... there is nothing in the hand book specifically for cooling/rad placement (didn't think there was)

There is this passage tho
9 Engine and drive train
-9.4 Engine compartment and floor modifications
--9.4.4 An opening between the engine compartment and the occupant cell of a low volume vehicle must be sealed to prevent exhaust gases, vapour, and liquids from entering the occupant cell.

So I'll have no problems

Got all the spanky bits now
Image
The housing is one I did up for my Zuk before I gave up trying to fit leaf springs
I'll make up the shackles today... changed my design a bit so I can keep costs down made them so they reuse the OEM shackle pins

we are planing a session on it tonight get the front axle built up with that fitted I'll be able to sort placement of the steering box...

 Yep bought 8 of em... there was two left.... be interested in seeing if there is a price rise with the new ones
Oh for those that don't know the High steer arms are from Tim 8) thank you mate, nice kit

Update isn't much got the axle all pulled apart and found the pinion seal was shot, might have something to do with the white cream we drained out of the diff  so need some new parts before I can assemble the axle.... ended up having a brain storming session  now I'm waiting a while to sober up some before I head home  hmmmm might do some work on my toy

Image
Image
The base is in 10mm and its made from two pieces.... 8) and a
profile shot of the shave
Image
And just so you can see the same shot on his old housing
Image

Oh and his old housing is too bent to bother straightening  the first one I've found thats been bent up that far!!.... oh and his back one isn't much better  its sporting extra camber on the drivers side, so thats now on the list for some attention hmmmm cruiser head and hilux axles
Might post up a few more pic's later today after the cam battery's charge

Smashed my camera  a while back so havn't bothered to update this (or anything else either)
There is going to be a bit of push on this as Clive (Pruggydore) had entered a team for the Qwavas Challange and one lad has pulled so he needs another truck to run so I'm going to have a go at getting this ready
Been alot done to the front axle, stuff thats not really worth photo'n brakes, ifs hub swop tie-rods etc
Stuff that is interesting... mounted the new Rad
Image
The 350 has been having a bit of problem with cooling at low speed so wingnut got this falcon V8 comp radiator and I'm setting up 4 a rear mount to fit it and keep it running in the mud, got a set of fans from the wreakers off an audi A6 these are mean had one mounted on another truck start up draw is hard enough that its burned out 2 30amp fuses in parallel... if you start them on the floor they will lift up and fly 8), I'm just finishing the shroud and then I'll sort the water lines
Got the bits for the rear axle dropped off
Image
Using a 60 series head and pumpkin and the surf axles so we get a center mount cruiser axles.... if I've got time I may shave it

Hopefully.... if I can finish this truck, I'll be in the passanger seat

Got the fans sorted
Image
Image
sheet metal is fun to work with when you have the right tools.... just got me a new box & pan folder :D

Forgot to mention the whole setup is made so minimal effort rad is out to be cleaned, the three little holes in the top are for cotter pins pull them out and fan slides off, two bolts and the hose clips and the rad is out 8) saying that being where it is should avoid any of the normal issues

Had a bit of a session on the rear axle tonight
stripped the bits we needed off the surf axle
Image
For the moment its going to go together with the drums after qwavas I'll probably change it over to disk
I'll be machining the end piece of the surf housing so it will fit inside the 60 series tube

Trimmed all the crap somebody had welded to the cruiser housing found a nice surprise.... they had gas'd the old spring perches off and in one spot gouged a section of the housing, all good now
Image
Fun bit is going to be mounting the axle housing in my lathe so I can fly cut the axle to take the surf axle end

Right I'm late to see my girl so

got a bit more done, been down south with work so things have been a bit slow

Made up a jig so I could fit the housings in the lathe and use a fly cutter to cut the housing so I can line up the bearing housing mount
Image
The tube on the housing isn't perfictly round so gets a bit thinner in places
Image
Then the end of the lux housings machined to fit
Image
And then pressed the end in
Image
Got to get the carbon hollow to machine up a muff joiner for the short side and machine the extention tube and then burn em.... depending on how things go tomorrow might be all done

Wee update done a bit of work on the toy yeasterday got a heap of small mechanical bits sorted and finished the rear axle housing (apart from the trac bar mounts, will do that once mounted)
Image
There is a 150mm long muff section inside that I machined out of a bit of carbon hollow got a bit lazy and left the wall thickness at 6mm  I'd been machining it down for long enough cut over 30mm off the dia along the length doing .4mm pass's becouse I don't have a large enough tail stock center
Image
The extension piece is some Sch 160 line pipe that I machined to the same thickness as the housing
Image

Got another couple to do.... one for a trials mate and I'll do another that I'll flick on trademe or if anyone here is keen

Re: LOL Another Project or THREE

lunch break so figured I'd update some stuff had a few sessons on the toy

threaded up enough U bolts to get really bored with it
Image
With the new axle on the back being bigger than the hillux I had to do up new ones for that as well as the fronts
Image
Fronts
Image
Me near the end of it all the session started to win
Image

Back axle is mounted and got the mount for the track rod
Image
Image
Had to sort out an adapter from the cruiser diff to the lux shaft
Image
the axle had been pushed back a little bit to fit 35"s so there was a spacer up the other end that with a little machining to the adapter matched the adapter + the extra length of the cruiser diff 8)

Sorted the Tie-rod, a little tip for you all out there doing high steer standard 80 series tie-rods $50 at toyota  cut the end off and re-thread em
Image
Here's a comparison shot standard rod vs the cut one
Image

Thanks for the comments... I just love f'n with things, with a bit of time and imagination almost anything is possible 8)
Right lunch is almost up time for me to go

Another update from last nights work
Got the track arm for the rear sorted
Image
here it is all fitted up
Image

That sorted I jacked the front axle up to see how it sat with the RUF see if my estimate was right for the height of the front spring hangers.... worked out sweet so I hacked out the old cross member, half of it was gone from where the guys who did the engine swop carved the back out to fit the rad
Image
and all finished
Image

I'll mount the surf steering box tonight, had a bit of a try to fit the box with the standard pitman arm... going to end up carving to much of the body out to fit it far enough forward.... so I've gone to a flat arm from suzola.... a good bonus with this arm is the steering shaft is within reach so no need to play around with longer shafts

Hi Reece,
Looking good, just wondering if your anti tramp bar bushes will have enough flex for your leaf spring flex.

Should be all good running a similar setup on another truck, I use standard rubber spring eye bushes they have plenty of flex

Mike wrote:love the fly cutting any less swing and it would have been a borer for that pretty friggen cool

Bit of imagination and being self taught (not knowing I shouldn't do that  ) I find ways of making the tools I have do

Still on target for a start at the Gwavas Challange, got the steering sorted and a heap of other little bits only major is the water lines....
Got the call up for work down south starting sat evening so after all this I wont be in the passanger seat  and then an hr later got the call up for the local port for friday night so I'm looking at a 24hr day 12hrs on this truck and another job tomorrow straight into a 12hr night shift at the port then hopefully some sleep before I fly down to CHCH for a couple of shifts
Right time for bed, will throw some pics up tomorrow

Liking your tramp rod Reece. We put an osilating (spelling :?:  ) joint in the Navara one which works a treat and was probably overkill.
