d21 gearbox rebuild no2

Post by will i am »

like any young farther on a apprentice wage i was on the hunt for cheap parts
looking threw trade me i found a cheap gearbox for one off my diesel terranos
bought it. put it in and bearing noise in the higher gears, drained the oil and out poped a piece of metal
at first i thought it was part off a bearing.
after half the day off thinking what it could be i figured id seen it from 3/4 syncromesh/gear unit
long story short i now have two terranos with gearboxes that need rebuilding again
i will post some pics and info over time on how i get along with the rebuilds
also if anyone has a diagram off the terrano gearboxes (manual) that would be very helpful and even a transfer case diagram.
im going off a ca18 diagram which is mostly the same

Bloody 'rano boxes.
I'm going to have to work off those ca18 diagrams too.
Now, I (like you), have 2 terranos, 3 gearboxes with 2 of them being rooted
Watching to see if some drawings come up.
Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Go for needle roller bearings, or different gearbox all together.

You will probably find it is a chunk that has broken off the counter shaft after the key way have been ripped to shit by the backlash.

I've done this to my box twice now, i've had enough so I welded it on this time. Not exactly "precision engineering" but will be stronger than the two keys from stock albeit non serviceable.

Also check to make sure your spigot bush is in good nick (one in the flywheel) as if that is buggered it will put nasty forces on the front bearing and needle roller bearing between the main shaft.

I'd be checking stuff over pretty closely if metal came out with the oil.

Maybe terranos are ok but in my mind if you only replace some bearings and one of the old ones you left in lunches itself your gonna kick yourself. I've done it once, never again. IF bearings aren't too pricey I'd do the whole lot while its apart.

I'd get the gasket from nissan as I'm too lazy to cut something like that out but can't you just buy the bearings individually? I put all skf bearings in a car box I had and it was way cheaper than a 'kit'. Just needed the old ones to measure off of.

Sometimes factory stuff is better than aftermarket but just an idea.

what ever you do dont put the standard bearing back in it. Take the bearing to a bearing shop and get the needle roller equivalants.
My old box was done once by a "reputable" company on Pamure Auckland, they did half the bearings with standard ones and left the rest, box shat itself less than 18mths later. Had a semi retired gearbox guru rebuild it second time around and he did it with roller bearings and it was a better box than it had ever been.
Guy that did it said he had seen plenty of terrano boxes fail under 100K on stnadard bearing, then fail agin within 100k if done with standard bearings.
I put 180k on mine after the second rebuild and it was still smooth, quiet and easy shifting, and it is still running around 4 years on from when I sold it, must be gettin on for 1/2 million ks on truck and 300 on box since last rebuild.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

emailed a few bearing and gearbox companies and they say you cant use needle roller bearings
"You can use cylinfdrical roller bearings, but then
you have no location on your shafts and end up with 5th gear problems" and that's one email i have had back
best bearing kit price so far $185 being a TM series bearing. meant to be a heavy duty bearing. will still need to buy lock nuts on top off that and front gasket and seals

onto another part off a story
bought a fully rebuilt gearbox from one off the garages down here who rebuilds a few off these, the guy said to use 2l 80w90 and 2l normal mineral engine oil 15w40.
said not many people know about doing this and it helps keep the gears and especially the syncro units clean and better shifting

has anyone tried this before?

boss said i couldnt use the work shop during work hours :x so.....
got to the workshop at 4:40am this morning :? . draged my personal terrano on there and put this fully rebuilt gearbox in there. all in except for startermotor and battery by 7am. put 2L of 80w90 and 2L of 15w40 in the gearbox part and 2L of 80w90 in the transfercase.
need to bleed the clutch. or even replace slave and master if i can get them cheap threw work.
took it for a test drive after i put a ball joint and fucked around getting other stuff done on her.
drives real nice (gearbox)
probably the best d21 manual ive driven so far. (probably cause most off the other ones ive driven have had issues)
still have to take the gearbox out off the other truck now tho

Just looking on trademe and found this listing. Someones asked questions about terrano gearbox bearings and use of needle rollers.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 806635.htm

I'm also needing to rebuild my gearbox soon. Will be removing and stripping this weekend.
Be interesting to find cost of bearings individual vs kit

I got my gearbox out today, might start stripping it tomorrow, or may be later in week after work each day

Looking at doing one of these...
any conclusions of best course of action?...

That place in New Lynn on Trademe has quoted me

$1250 for reconditioned box
$450 for replacement of bearings/seals/gaskets (Standard ones)
$600 for replacement of bearings/seals/gaskets (TM series? "outlast standard bearings by 50%")

$180 for bearings kit (didn't say if TM or standard)

all + GST

He said he can't get one of the roller bearings needed so no point in putting any in at all.

For the lock nuts, if you have access to a lathe just machine 0.5mm off the face of it so the stake marks are 180 out from the old ones.

Of the bearings in the kit you got, are they all ballrace bearing type? or are any roller bearing?
I've been trying to do investigations as to what the difference is between so called heavy-duty and normal kits. Worth knowing when HD kits are over $100 more..

Hi guys, lots of G/box chat here. Manual ones i guess. I have a d21 Pathfinder, with 2.4 petrol. I was wondering what G/box you guys have behind your TD27s?
Mine is a fs5w71c, smaller then what the V6 manual has. Had it recon last year, so hope it lasts a while, but after reading all your posts, I'm not so sure.. :?
Don't know what bearings went in it.

Probably is same gearbox as ours, just with different bellhousing to suit different engine
The v6 has a larger unit.
Nissan seem to make 2 general gearboxs (known as bigbox( FS5R30A ) and smallbox-(fs5w71c))
There are different variants and bellhousing/ tail housings different between applications

The d21 td27 has the fs5w71c
the terrano II has the FS5R30A
This fits in and you will not break it with the td27
You just have to find one. Here is the one going into my terrano before the weak one breaks. I will sell the orginal
