TD42 turbo options/advice
TD42 turbo options/advice
Hi, new to the site, just purchased a 91 Patrol LWB which I am stoked with. Main purpose to tow the boat and get to those hard to get places....
I am reading loads of forum and am now more lost the more I read; I want to turbo my patrol!!!!
I rang loads of Diesel and turbo specialist in the BOP most around the 5k.. I have spoken to Dave at Just 4x4 and I knwo he does an installation for 3k.... any reviews/feedback for these plse?
Also looking at the DSR option on the website(same as but cheaper than his trade me listings) a complete bolt on for $1790.. but he has idicated that it doesn't include the dump pipe and some hose clips...
I have basic mech knowledge... and can follow instructions..
My diesel mech mates have said proceed with caution and have asked me about if these include tuning the pump etc
I think I only reallly need to fit a EGT so I don't cook the machine.. feedback plse?
if any others out there have more options, better deals etc plse let me know,. If there is some1 in the vegas area willling to assist me an has fitted a DSR with favourable result plse let me know.. haoppy to throw some cash ya way to aid me..
HELP...... I have a big abot and don't wana change to 1st to pull it over to Whktane or tarawera..

Re: TD42 turbo options/advice
it depends how quick you wish to part with 3to 5k , so like i'm doing in the dsr turbo fitup by my self or save the pain and get someone to do a turn key job,
and at this stage my opinion is the 5k turn key option

Re: TD42 turbo options/advice
the DSR looks like a good mostly complete kit. Not much you need to make up. If I had the coin laying around id probably go this route. I like to do everyting myself I can. Im just in Whakatane if you need some hands at some stage (pretty cheap rate lol). If you've seen the video of the DSR kit in action it looks/sounds quite impressive.

Re: TD42 turbo options/advice
the dsr kits seem to be the way to go but make sure you stick to the standard boost settings. Would also pay to get boost compinsator if your not a fan of black smoke. They tend to blow a bit when off boost. This also causes the egts to climb pretty quick.Would seriously look at putting a decent size front mount intercooler.these make a good difference

Interestingly enough, I see DSR now show a chart with their power increases (40% more torque/power), but the chart is actually from a Safari kit.

More than a little misleading when he doesn't mention that the results have nothing to do with his product, and the fact he has snuck DSR at the bottom of the results too. I'm not worried that he doesn't have any power figures for his kits, but it's a shame he deliberately puts these figures up in a way that implies his kits give these results
I've been looking at one of his kits as an option for a safari I'm thinking of buying, but am a little wary now

Re: TD42 turbo options/advice
Well, I asked on TM why the power graph shown was for a Safari setup, was told it's what people wanted to see
So I asked if I could expect the same increases with this kit, and was told the DSR runs a bigger turbo, and not the "cheat" the Q&A like a forum
So I'm assuming that the answer was no
I see he has now changed his ad to mention that the pic is for reference only. Only took 2 questions and being blacklisted, when all he needed to do was be up front. Never mind, won't recommend him to anyone now, and will buy my kit elsewhere.

, the kit was not a kit manifold needed grinding all the line were wrong fittings, He told me what I wanted to hear not the truth. Dont know if he knows stuff all about his product or he likes miss leading people

all his stuff he sells he lies or missleads. he has never backed his own product up. he doesnt care what happens as long as he makes a sale.
there is a guy in nelson who i saw can do a kit for 1200. im not sure wat comes with what but i def know he doesnt deal with dsr and he does know his shit. he used to own turbo tech here in chch. I swa his comment in a question on his auction

Thanks for the info, I'll look into this a little more if I end up buying a non turbo.

Re: TD42 turbo options/advice
ive just fitted the dsr kit, and its in getting the fueling done now should get it back monday or tuesday. i must admit i did expect the ''kit'' to be a little more comprehensive but there was a picture to see what was in the kit when i bought it... water hoses are a struggle and expensive and what comes in the kit is of little use, i havent connected water in yet as its not critical but i will connect, oil return is a real arse to do as you need to spend an afternoon driving round shops to find a suitable fitting, made my own dump pipe with pyro fitting. i got all my silicon hoses, stainless clamps, crossover pipe etc from america for $180 nzd with free shipping world wide off ebay, i would say all up my turbo has cost me $2200 including me making full exhaust and dump pipe, and set up (just fueling) not properly like coxsy has and rebuilt pump.
the manifold isnt perfect but does the job, with the turbo mounted there isnt much room for the dump pipe, shame the turbo isnt a bit further towards the front of the truck by around an inch. a little modification also required on the front corner of the manifold, its almost as if the manifold was designed for another vehicle but just happens to fit the safari/patrol aswell.
having said that would i do it again?? i dont have $5k for a turn key and i did this build when money was available over 2-3 months. personally i would possibly buy the manifold only and make the kit up my self with a better quality turbo which is what i might do over the next year.
it still turns the 35s better than without, but it is one of those cases where YOU REALLY DO ONLY GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

As for trademe.. You made a comment on our trademe that was rude and offensive - We answered it nicely and then you made another that was just digging a hole in us.. We asked trademe to remove your comments and they did as it was not rel event to the auction. What so ever. Trademe is not ment to be used as a forum. Our sales people blocked you.

Are you talking about my questions asking why there was a power graph showing Safari Turbo results? You replied "thats what people want to see". I then asked if your kit provided the same results, your reply was not to CHEAT this as a forum, so you couldn't even provide an answer

Both questions were relevant, and the TM Nazi's should not have removed them, because your ad was misleading. I see you changed the ad to show that the results are an "example only", after I contacted TM to show exactly why I asked the questions I had.
If you can't be up front and answer RELEVANT questions, toughen up, niether question were attack on DSR or the product, but asking you to be clearer on what you were advertising.

Re: TD42 turbo options/advice
bahahahahaha just telling people how it is.
My question on trade me is why are you showing a power graph from a Different brand and different product that has absolutely no relevance to you turbo wat so ever.
And as for your KIT dont you mean a half assed kit. you say your kit is bolt on no mods required, yeah thats a tui add right there.
BTW your feedback is just showing that people were happy with prompt delivery, no comments on how the product actually is. i wonder how happy they are now that they've used your product.
as dave said put YOUR results up from YOUR kit, instead of using someone elses
And yea your closed tm account why was that close again
Good Weekend

Re: TD42 turbo options/advice
anyhow back to the thread topic.......
Me personally i'd get the manifold from dsr,get it smoothed out(sandblasted). then id look around for a tdo5 and get it rebuilt, Get a good sized intercooler,a 3in exhuast and an anroid fitted to fuel pump.
I had a j pipe manifold, Small top mount, fully rebuilt tdo5,full 3inch exhuast, add in all the clamps, silicone hoses, etc and cost me less than a grand!!.
If your keen to do a bit yourself its really easy to save alot of coin.
If don't have the know how go to a good reputable turbo guy toss him the keys tell him turbo it and ring me when its done. will cost a good 5+grand but will (should) last the distance.
My 2c

Why dont you refund people when your turbos have obviously failed when used correctly? I've heard of several peoples DSR turbos not working as they should from new, and you always say its the person who fitted its fault.
Also what happened to your old trademe account?
