Because Terrano manual boxes suck.

Mine sucked so bad I welded the countershaft gear on.

As for the diffs, are you sure about those ratios? I was always on the terms that the Autos and the V6s came with the 4.3:1 ratios and the diesel manuals had the 4.6:1

But to be honest the only problem you will have if you don't change the ratios is that the speedo wont rear right.

This is all news to me. I have only had the pleasure of looking under the bonnet of manuals.
Use the speedo drive that comes with the trans and find out what diffs it was running.
As far as ratios go with manuals, there is no rhyme or reason to it. kinda depends what day they came out of the factory
After looking at a 4.6 and a 4.8 speedo drives, have worked out they may be colour coded.
4.6 was white and 4.8 was red.
Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers,
Simon.
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Autos are pretty shit too, They only last for 200ks then need a $3000 rebuild, also if you tow with them without a big trans cooler they #### out. but yeah they probably are better than the manuals, still by far prefer manual though.
