holden 3.8 flywheel q?

Post by J_Dub »

am about to bolt up flywheel to the motor.
now the motor was originally an auto, and purchased the flywheel seperate.

theres no dowels in my flywheel to crank and with all the bolts in loose there is a bit of play/slop

just wondering if thats right, the bolts dont have a shank at the end of them to locate into the hole tightly..

there is 2 dowel holes in the crank but no dowel holes or pins in the flywheel..

should there be dowels or is this a standard setup just having 8 bolts and no dowels???

The auto engine has a different crank to the manual engine.

the dowel holes are normally not drilled right through so are you looking at front of fly or the back, there should always be dowel holes.

or have you brought a 6 bolt flywheel ie 6x holes and 2x dowels but you've put 8 bolts through it?

definately an 8 boly flywheel. and that wouldnt be possible as the 2 dowel holes arent on the same line as the bolt holes..

friken weird as there simple isnt any holes in the back of the fly for dowel pins yet there is x2 holes in the crank to take pins

it seems some late model flys didnt have dowels

but yea might be wise to get some holes drilled just to be safe

we run v6 in stockcars and we run a 8 bolt flywheel, we bolt flywheel up then drill 2 dowl holes through flywheel in to crank and knock 2 dowls in, we are yet to have a problem and we pull 8000rpm most nights, for a dowl we use a 8mm hi tensile bolt shank, just make sure when you drill through the flywheel you drill in to the crank not the seal,, (been there)

thanks nick

as above mate. some have got away with out the dowels but I would be putting some in. did you buy genuine bolts. if there a little loose I would be looking for universal bolts with a short shank on them.

best kept secret, lol, does not take much, doubble valve springs a bullet cam and ballanced bottom end, have run 2 seasons with only doing rings and bearings as a precaustion, but never any flywheel problems

Yea the top end tends to stay together but the std bearings tend to not be up to it! Wouldn't surprise me if they sometimes run low on oil with the front sump setup either.

good to hear, might have to go down n talk to the local machine shop.
im guessing you just drill the 2 holes at equal distance to keep things balanced?
