Checking engine oil level
They don't come more ignorant than me. Thinking oil level might be low I checked the dip stick with engine cold. No oil marks at all. I added about 1 litre of oil and checked again. Still nothing showed on the dip stick. The vehicle is a 1996 Nissan Mistral TD27. Am I missing something?
Re: Checking engine oil level
yep you are missing something, more oil. If it isn't showing on the dipstick and the dipstick is the correct one for the car, then keep pouring it in until it does. (assuming it isn't just running out all over the ground etc
).

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
Re: Checking engine oil level
are you checking the right dipstick
is it an auto you may be checking the transmission but then that should have lots of oil on it

If its correct dipstick, and your still not seeing oil on it after pouring an extra 1litre in, im surprised you havnt farked your engine.... keep pouring it in... Or maybe try draining it all and starting again.

+1, I'd dump all engine oil and start again, that way you know it's got the correct amount

May as well do your filter(s) while you're there too.

Re: Checking engine oil level
I came across this problem once before and it turned out the bottom of the dipstick was broken off.
So it had enough oil even though it wasnt reading on the dipstick.
