PTO winch for gen 1 V6 Pajero
Hi Guys, I have done a search through the forums for this but dont seem to be able to find any info on this, so I hope that I havent missed anything.
I have a 1989 gen 1 V6 3L SWB pajero, Model code is E-L141GW GNJ.
I am wanting to fit a PTO winch out of my 1987 LWB 2.5D pajero into the V6.
Both are 5 speed manuals.
I have heard that the PTO does not fit onto the transfer case of the V6 model as the gears do not mesh. Can anyone shed any light on this subject for me? Has anyone fitted at PTO to a V6 petrol Gen 1? I know I need to bin the catalytic converter to get enough room for the PTO to fit, but are there any other issues at all?
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers

Righty Ho peeps. you can take a PTO off a 2.5 diesel pajero ( old square shape ) , and put it onto a V6 Pajero , ( 91 newer shape ) , as my cousin has done this and it works. the PTO winch head itself fits in the front end , the PTO shafts fits through the wholes. and the PTO drive unit bolts up to the transfer case , BUT there is no COG in the transfer case to make this operate , so my cousin got a engineer to make a cog to operate the PTO drive unit ,and then the transfercase needs to come out and be dismantled and the cog needs to be installed then the transfercase goes back in ,and from there the lever (in cab )bolts in , and you are sorted .
( this is what my cousin had to do with his , it may vary from model to model )

Good luck

Re: PTO winch for gen 1 V6 Pajero
ok thanks guys, so it sounds like i might have to do alittle work to the transfer case which is what i had suspected.
So the next question then is can i take the transfer case out of my 89 LWB 2.5D parts truck and swap that into the V6 so i can bolt the PTO directly onto it? does anyone know if I am going to come unstuck with that change over?
Thanks heaps for the help

Re: PTO winch for gen 1 V6 Pajero
Don't know about your last question sorry. But the V6 had a stronger gearbox than the 4D56 (2.5 turbodiesel) so I would have a guess and say they wouldn't BUT you never just know....
They had a different transfer case ratio also so the PTO won't just mesh with it but I think that has been answered already.
Unfortunately it is not that simple.

Do you know what the two different transfer case ratios are between the 2.5D and the V6? i was trying to find this out today as i took the truck out for its first good shakedown over the weekend and it could certainly do with a lower final drive, especailly when going down hill, and this is only going to get worse when i put 33's on it. So wondered if swapping the 4D56 transfer case into the V6 would solve two problems, firstly allowing the PTO to mesh and secondly giving me a lower final drive. I have never had one of these (or any other sort of gear box for that matter) apart, but looking at the distruction manual it looks like it is a splined input and output shaft, so as long as the inputs were the same everything else should be solvable (even if it means having a new rear drive shaft made). When you are talking about the gearbox being stronger are you talking about the 5 speed or the transfer case or both?
Thanks heaps

Yea Gearing is a Pajero's biggest downfall. Low range is arse. Diff ratios are mint, but the tranfer is just not enough. The v6 one is 1.925 and the 2.5 is 1.944 so neither here nor there. Your 2.5 may have 5.29 diff ratios though that you could put into your V6 providing the 2.5 has the big diff. The front diff is a bit smaller on the 5.29 and no front locker is available but seems to still be up to the task strength wise.
The gearbox thing I was just referring to the gearbox itself, got no idea about the transfer cases but they are tough enough.
Your 3.0V6 transfer is sort of a black sheep unless it is the same as the L200/Triton ones (which i'd say it is) as the Pajero only ran with it for a couple of years until the super select transfer box came out.

Thanks Glen
All three trucks I have are running 4875 diffs, and I have already dropped front and rear lockers in the V6 so wont be looking to change these too fast. I have heard that you can get lower gear sets for the paj however, i wonder if these could be purchased to lower low range and match the PTO at the same time. Have you heard of this?
Cheers

No, the low gears do not match the PTO. You can get low gears yes, about $1100 ozzy.
The transfer case gear from the 4D56 should fit into the 6G72 case but that is only an educated guess, I haven't done it. That should give you your PTO + V6......
What diff locks did you put in?

Re: PTO winch for gen 1 V6 Pajero
I found some arb knock offs out of china, got front, rear, compressor and all other bits for about nz $1700 +gst.
Taken them for a couple of good thrashings and no problems so far.
So the next job in (hopefully) about 2 months time will be the bigger tyres, body lift and ball joint flip. Than bar work and winch. Have been looking at things today and was wondering if i can get the lower transfer case gears and then get a gear made for the pto to match (assuming as you said the pto wont match the lower gears). It sure would be nice to have the pto AND the lower gearing, maybe i can bring world peace at the same time.....

Re: PTO winch for gen 1 V6 Pajero
Totally off topic but what site did you use for the chinese knock offs?
And I am surprised you got one for the front... was it the RD110?

Re: PTO winch for gen 1 V6 Pajero
The web address is http://www.langemachinery.com
yep got the RD46 for the rear and the RD110-4 for the front. These are apparently the older style ARB lockers. The quality seems ok although the offset for the rear one was out by about 3-5mm, not alot but enough to be a pain. Couple of other minor things also with the air lines etc but nothing that couldn't be solved by my handy mechanic (Steve at Fleet Services Napier - Good bloke
)
they sure make a differnce to the performance of the truck off road however, best thing since toilet paper I reckon!!!
Also heard back from MArks last night, apparently both gears on the idler shaft in hte transfer case are changed so you are right the PTO wont mesh with them, so now i have to decide if i go for PTO winch or lower gearing or try for both with a new gear for the PTO which may have to wind up to big to fit the PTO housing.......i suspect this is going to get expensive.......just dont tell my wife

Re: PTO winch for gen 1 V6 Pajero
Know someone who has an early 90's SWB V6 Pajero with a PTO winch - not sure whether it was factory or had to be adapted but either way must be possible.
