Whats the wheel travel of modified 4x4's and trials trucks?
Track width of safari diff and a hilux diff with some large offset rims on it?
Tack width of a trials truck?
Wheel base of a trials truck?

how long is the piece of string in the what colored bucket. its all up to personal preference but wide as possible does not always mean better for trials because if you go too wide you have bottoming out problems on the diff head. as for wheel travel as much as you can get on down travel but limited but not 0 up travel id say 2 inches but again its no set rule. cant really answer the rest of your questions, just to be curious are you building something and want to know where to start from?

new2zukes, I am thinking of building something. I've got some ideas I want to try out but before I start investing real time and money I need to know what sort of parameters to achieve. Basically if the design doesn't meet or exceed existing specifications I won't go ahead with it. I'm gathering information to see if it's worth doing at the moment.

Independent suspension system for extreme offroad applications, but something that will articulate as good as a solid axle with the benefits of low unsprung mass. It's a huge task and many have attempted this in the past with moderate sucess but I'm keen to give it a poke and see where it goes.

our club is doing a inhouse comp this weekend we have many nationals truck that will be there
majority of the chaps are pretty cool when you want to be talking about their own trucks
its out the back of pukekohe
theres limited parking and only competing trucks will be allowed onto the farm but if you have a good pair of gummys and want to come out for a look pm me and i will send you the info
this is not open for all and sundry due to limited areas that we have been given but an extra invited guest will be sweet
failing that the nationals will be starting october labour weekend down in new plymouth somewhere head down for the scrutineering where you will see shit loads of the trucks that a pen and paper and and ask permission to record their trucks diamensions advoid camaras as some get "personal" about photos due to security iussues etc

What you should do is search for info on the KOH trucks as many are 4wd and have independent suspension with very long arms etc.
You wont achieve what you want using pajero stuff.

Mudlva, I'm busy this weekend but if this happens any other time (other than next month, gonna be a dad for the first time) I would be dead keen to head out. I presume you're a member of the Manukau club?
Flyingbrick, Shannon Campbell's truck rocks! Really interested to see what his new one's gonna be like. I havent got the funds to go that custom and that big so I need to see what I can get at good prices. Your right, I don't think the hubs are going to work but the half shafts and cv's might still be a go.

?? How does going wide give you diffing out problems

Safari with flipped 10's sits on about 2100
Wheel travel isnt really comparable. So many different variables but with most 4x4's in NZ, 12" of shock travel is about the max. You do get the odd landrover with more than that though

Where you want that travel is a widely varied opinion. For crawling, uptravel isnt needed as much, but Ive always found it extremely underated. Depending on how much travel you want to run, Id be trying to get 6" of uptravel out of it (means you can hit shit with momentum and retain it)
Wheel base of a trials truck varies. Id say 85-90" would be the mean??

nope i dont do trials i do winch challenge but have been to a few trials events and seen alot of trucks and seen what seems to work. i am running 14inch travel shocks in the rear and about 12 up front and it is more than enough for all occasions (except rock crawling maybe)

Turoa and new2zukes, thanks for the info. I think what new2zukes is getting at is similar to the lwb vs swb situation where a lwb with the same ground clearence as a swb will have a lower ramp over angle.
I need to model it up but I suspect the 12" of shock travel will lead to more at the wheel depending on setup.
