Not sure if this is in right area but you guys certainly are the ones that know the tracks!

Ok, own the truck, so want a track to go on. I see there are a few up Twizel way - any recommendations. Not an expert, and not overly confident in river crossings.

Anything closer than Twizel?

Thank you

There are the tracks down past Alex on the way to Dunedin. You have the old man and old woman ranges, the serpentine. They are all pretty good. There are a couple in Geraldine area, Orari gorge I think, and one that crosses a small range by passing Farlie which is quite good, but you have to pay $20 for that one as its private land. Then you have the rivers up here in chch, ryton station up at lake coleradrige, west coast tracks are pretty good. Another good one is Lake sumner if your by yourself, pack a tent and stay the night at loch katrine, but ring doc and get the combination to the gate(if its still there and hasn't been ripped out lately). Best thing todo is watch the trips going off here and get yourself on one. Just sort out good tow points and get I highly recommend a snorkel.

If you are going in one vehicle make sure you have a winch(hand or powered) or some other gear to extract yourself if you get stuck

Get confident wth river crossings as most trips in the sth island have a river or four to cross, often the only way to access down here is up a river. If you are coming on the training day next week, we wuill go over river crossings and what's required in driving skill and vehicle prep. I personally love river crossings, especialy the deep ones  .

Al when is the training day - sounds very interesting?

Thanks Mike they all sound excellent - been on DOC site but only could find out about Twizel ones - the Godley drive looked a goodey. I was planning on staying out in a tent actually - or hut if there is one on track. Seems I had better give DOC a call in Geraldine. How do you go about finding out about the private ones?

I do have a hand winch will certainly help I am sure. Truck is fairly capable - 35" lifted, snorkel etc so should be fine going most places, altho want the easier side as not going with any other vehicles.
