Fan hitting radiator during a water crossing

Post by jagni401 »

My mate has LN106 hilux, and his radiator has a gash in it after doing a water crossing. It appears the water has forced the blades to touch the radiator. For some silly reason its an ifs hilux, so are they more susceptible than beam axle trucks with their small angled bash plates??
Are there any quick remedies to stop it happening again, other than tying something on the front to create more of a bow wave?

Cheers

Hook your electric fan up to a switch and just when you hit the water turn it off, also stops all that water getn blown around the motor.

electric fan on a mid 90's hilux??
He was in 2nd low, so I don't think speed was a factor. He was just trying to push a smooth bow wave in front of him

yeah that happens, plastic blades bend when they hit water water, if its an electric fan turn it off and remember to turn it back on again or if its a mechanical fan throw it away and get a steel one

if its the plastic fan run by a pully, throw it away and grab a electric 1.
Mine did the same thing, only found broken blade and a big dent in the radiator, i actually put it down to thrashing it with broken engine mounts (solid mounted now). I did alot of river work and in low box 2nd, still threw the water over the roof in mine, so im guessing there was huge pressure pushing the water through.

Body lift can also cause this problem as it shifts radiator in relation to fan.
