td42 oil pressure after turbo fit
just fitted dsr turbo kit to my non turbo td42, run it for the first time yesterday everything seems fine but not that much different power wise (didnt expect much without fuel adjust) something isnt right, turbo spins and has oil to and from it (does exactly as it should) alot of air noise with 3'' intake, 3'' exhaust but i havent touched the fueling, had good oil pressure before fitment and now i have very random readings on the guage, prior to fitment guage always read just under 1/2 way, since fitting it doesnt get to 1/4 and randomly goes up and down to nothing, only did a few kms as oil pressure concerns me...has new valvoline 15-40 oil and ryco filters.
any ideas, truck has been sitting without oil or sump fitted and hasnt run for 4 months. the only things i can think of is oil feed to turbo to big????? oil pump relief valve spring???oil press guage fault???change oil to 20-50???
took oil feed line off and put plug back in block which only made a slight difference, engine sounds the same as any other td42 no unusual noises etc it drives the same as alot of other 1988 gq's but has always had a bit of a flat spot at 100kms...
want to get fueling done by someone who knows what they are doing but dont want to drive there with oil press as it is at mo

my oil feed line is teed into the altornator line thru a braided hose. my oil pressure always sat above half way and is no different now.

i think it could be the guage/sender, seems far to random to be major but i could be wrong.

got rid of my factory oil pressure gauge 5yrs ago they aint that good they go up and dwn when they get faulty,replace with mechancal oil feed gauge ,wot i mean is the oil is fed right up into the gauge,
you will lose your oil warning light thou but you dont really need it with this sort of gauge as its fed by oil rather then a electric one,
with your turbo just wind the fuel up quater at a time or less,turn it clockwise and then try it,mine has only gone from lets say 12 o'clock to 12.15,
you got a EGT gauge ?? so you know whats going on

i don't know if i would want to run a oil line into the cab, if it gets nicked with something sharp or develops a leak thats dangerous grounds. i brought a electric autogauge one and its mint a sender and 2 wires to the gauge easy as.

Realistically, there are plenty of wires and cables running in and out of that cab that could cause drama if you nicked them.
You have got water that could cause permanent scarring running right next to your leg that should be more cause for concern than a small oil line.
My non turbos run/ran at 2, close to 3 if really pushed hard for a long period of time, turbo runs at 3, just over 4 if pushed hard. Caused a bit of panic when I saw that on the gauge! It is slightly over filled with oil though. Remedying that next week so I'd imagine that will come down a little.

i have bought a guage and fitting today so should see some results.. i have no egt guage but i have put a fitting in the dump pipe straight after the turbo for one.

as vince said,ditch the factory gauge [after 2 2nd hand and 1 nissan new] went mechanical and at least you can [see a reading] piece of mind to say the least. pyro gauge is a MUST for turbo tunning... tune to the pyro and you SHOULD be ok jm2cw

cold at idle 55psi
cold at 100kph 60psi
normal running temp at 100kph 45psi (manual lock up off)
idle at normal temp 40psi
has always done these figures since i have owned it and had this type of gauge in the last 5yrs

thanks, fitted the guage today and it reads as follows,
cold idle just under 60psi.
cold at 100kph just over 60psi.
normal temp at 100kph just under 45psi
now for the real odd reading,
at normal operating temp idle (900rpm) is hardly registering and is less than 10psi,
why??? as soon as i depress the throttle it goes up straight away, surely that isnt normal???
idleing in traffic in town i am getting virtually nothing until rpms go over 1200rpm...is it just a random thing etc etc

whats your kms total, your pressures sound like mine, so i fitted a extra gauge , so happy with the oil pressure, now,
older bro reconded the pumps should be replaced after 250,000, but personal choise on that

change your oil filters of late?? but i guess you have as you done a turbo conversion

vince, yep new oil and filters, she's done 289,000..... could the fact that the rocker cover breather is breathing to atmoshere at the mo cause any issues? until i fit my catch tank??? could i weld an inlet so the breather goes back into engine rather than catch tank without issues??

coxsy at norm operating temp does your oil pressure drop off to virtually nothing at idle??? or what does it read??

muskie i have not a catch can at the mo either,my rocker breather pipe just hangs down the back of my block at the mo,but you have just reminded me that i have to do that,lol

my gq was having the same oil pressure reading and was on valvoline as well. Since changed to delo 400 and oil pressure readings are way better. of interest it also had valvaline filters and didn't hold its pressure when switched off. Changed filter brand and that issues went away

you may have to wait on a confirmation on my oil pressure till i get this truck legal again, then there's a month away coming up too, USA
then again thinking back pre turbo yes pressure on gauges did drop back at bit, it never caused any problems so put it down to gauges and oil beening hot

all looks very familiar, my truck runs great and has no engine issues, it had nissan oem filters on before and had ''normal'' oil pressure, since ive put the turbo on and ryco filters with valvoline its been crap, so, i will give it a few weeks and change to better quality oil and filters..
never had any issues with ryco or valvo on any of my other safaris??

Now you mention it..my gauge seemed to read very low using valvoline, had Fram filters on it tho. My gauge is still not accurate compared to the aftermarket one tho. Changed to using that cheap calibre formula diesel oil from supercheap and it seems to be a bit less noisy and gauge works better. Probably really just crap old pressure sensors tho, and we all know what nissan gauges are like lol. My fuel and temp gauges are the only ones that still work properly on the whole cluster! Oil and volts read low, speedo and tacho work when they feel like it tacho usually reads high.. im pretty sure the old girl wouldnt last too long if i was actually doing a constant 3900rpm in 3rd gear haha
