Oh, so youre gonna push for details......well :P

Its still a pretty epic climb but a couple of local lads (who I met, but more about that later) have done a bit of trimming lower down a some spade work on the big washout-clay canyon bit nr the top. This is pretty dedicated as they have never got their own trucks up that far yet (stock Paj and Disco)!

to give you an idea of the awesomeness of the track, we had 7 trucks:

fully locked VX on 36" simex's
fully locked Pajero on 35" KM2's with crawler gears
locked rear - LSD front Hilux on 35" silverstones
fully locked swb 70 on 33" kumho's
locked rear Rangie on 33" silverstones
locked rear swb GQ Safari on 33" Wranglers
locked rear V8 Defender 110 on 35" Silverstones (mine)

The only one to drive the whole thing without any assistance was the VX!

The Safari had to use his winch to pull himself back onto the track when he started sliding sideways in the muddy washed out corner nr the bottom. The VX and my Landy were the only ones to drive the grey shithole halfway up. The 70 and the hilux winched, and the rest were snatched through the bog. The washout/clay canyon is pretty knarly, narrow, rutted, steep, loose, off camber etc etc but driven by all. It would be a big ask for anything without a locker in my opinion.

Anyway....near the top, on a rutted piece with a rock ledge, I busted a front halfshaft...doh!! Sooo we never had a look down the back where the old mines were. There were some guys on quads there at the same time who took a look down there and came back with grey faces and said they would not take quads down....sounds like a challenge.

Drove back in 2wd with rear locker and managed to procure the necessary parts to fix it ready for the next day. Would not have been possible without help from some fantastic locals and resulted in me meeting the 2 lads who have been improving the track and their Dad who is a thoughly decent bloke (thanks John).

Cheers

Wicked, sounds like the track hasnt changed much then, Im looking forward to it. The last few times I went there I drove down to the mines but i have never been able to drive back up, ive always had to winch.

The washout will ALWAYS change...sometimes it's driveable as I did with one of Al's trips before he jumped the ditch and sometimes it will take some spade work!

For me the most dodgy part is the mud holes at the start, it's like russian roulette...sometimes you get thru one hole and not the other - then on the next trip it's vice versa.

L-andy, we got to the top for some tucker, to go further would be to go downhill past the old tin hut and into the Totara river.

We made it to the top, just not with my truck. Left it parked 150m or so from summit :( Went past the trig point and stopped for a bit at the big clearing at the back. Views are awesome!

Twodiffs, I'm keen to know how far that track actually goes down the back??

Latest LINZ map shows it stopping at the tin hut near where the mines were and google earth doesn't show any evidence of it going any further. But.... I have seen some older maps which show it going all the way down to the Totara Valley rd and/or down to the Mokinui (sp?) river.

Anybody ever gone far past the tin hut down the back??

A number of years ago (10) a Jeep mate and I did Mt Greenland , to the top and down as far as we cold get, this wet our appetite and we did a recognizance from State Highway 6 along Totara Valley Rd, at the back of Mt Greenland we where met by a rather irate farmer who thought we where looking for hunting spots, after he realized his hunting area was quite safe and you can,t take FITZY anywhere without him knowing someone ------ don,t I know you from Clay Target shooting --- ,he was very helpful , and no you can,t get on to the back of the Mt Greenland track, unless the situation has changed since then. He did how ever offer his farm tracks to us, an offer that was never taken up. Have a great trip ,

GET DIRTY,

FITZY.

Join the club mate...the better half & myself sussed it out on the map etc one day and we reckon IF the Totara was driveable then you could get to within 2k's of the track that comes down past the old hut. It does get more rugged from there as well.

JR asked me to copy directions :D

Basically you head to Kumara, before you get there turn left onto the Old Christchurch rd then right onto Duffers Creek Rd then left onto Stafford Loop rd, head down a bit, campground on right.

This is a standard DOC camp ground with water, BBQ facilities. It is a nice area, central and cheap. $6 adults, $1.50 kids.
Please bring a sack of firewood as there is minimal dry wood there. The idea is to arrive on the friday night so we can spend time 4wdriving on saturday, not travelling.

Is this where we are camping on Friday night?
Slab Hut Creek.... mmmm.... I'm pretty sure I've driven this, via two different entrance points, both ending up on the Big River Road, but have a different name for it.

Oh.. and Scott cant make it.

Awesome weekend JR, :D cheers for putting it up and for letting an unknown tag along. Pushed my limits way out past where I'd been, especially Tailings -that was totally excellent , less said about Mount Muppet the better :? .
Sorry pic porn'ers, I was too busy hanging on the wheel to take pic's - others should have some tho.
