tim, would not buy red tops again, yellow are a deep cycle battery and better for winching and draining down, they have a better life cycle.

I'm not a huge fan but its just based on price. Through a marine dealer in chch you can get 1000cca sealed batteries bloody cheap so its worth shopping around.

don't know about optima bats but just make sure its a starting bat and not a deep cycle one. Have heard only reason they better is cause you can mount em on an angle.

optimas are a gel battery not acid so dont leak and are coiled windings not plates so can handle vibration and shock much better. worth the money??? not sure.
you dont want a deep cycle battery. cant handle the hammering from a winch fast enough.

scored this a few days ago and thought...I can make it fit

But after lots of measuring....it's going to be an arse, drivetrain is just set too far back, rear d/s would be a hideous angle even with a double cardan :!: , front d/s would hang down way below control arms, and rear cross member would have to be drastically modified and the rear links are on that  ....
Too bloody hard :(
Must be getting soft

What ever happened to the 6m that was in front of it? (sorry Tim :D )

I put that dual together and it worked a treat, then someone got hold of it in a deal that gave me an extra couple of cylinders and a hellishly cool noise   There was also a pair of Histeer arms involved, which I have now bought twice, because they are now on my mongrel as well

bit more head scratching this afternoon and a couple while doing so, and it's not going to happen, the setup linkage wise etc is just too well built and gussetted to change, can be done but would be a major and spoil a lot of hard work.
I Would be happy to swap the complete dual case steup for a 4.7 gear set as per the orig plan  , otherwise it's doomed to a space under the bench for now .....it will get used one day

Hi Tim
After last weekends event, I think my comments on Page 3 of the thread are valid and personally I don't feel comfortable with a high centre of gravity.

I'm not picking on you but expressing my personal feeling

Cheers Richard

Sure we fell over and the truck may be an inch or so too high, however.......
I had a roll in the same place as mike holmes who has winch challenged for the last 4 yrs without a roll, they peg it puposely in such a way as to make real hard to take corners....when you stop and put your truck in reverse you get a DNF and get 100 points added to your score, so pushing the limits to avoid a reverse is what pleases the crowd and why they come back year after year to watch.
There was multiple rolled trucks of all types everwhere all day.
To be honest Richard your opinion this time isn't valid, and people who live in glasshouses shouldn't throw stones, your turn may come, we had it pulled back onto it's wheels both time's, started it up and drove away, I washed it today and put it back in the shed undamaged, will you be able to do that in your incredible, indestructable, perfect height, perfect length, perfect powered, betstest ever built 4x4 that has ever exsisted after two rolls.
(I do enjoy your company so hopefully i'll be there at the time with my camera handy)
I hate making comments such as this as I like to respect opinions, but sometimes I get cheesed off like anyone.
But don't be offended Richard i'm not picking on ya, just expressing my personal feeling

Nice to know where I stand, I have a good amount of friends in the 4x4 scene who never post any of their trips, opinions, mods, or anything they are up to whatsoever.
I guess the latest comments in this thread cements the reasons why

Aptly named as Richard. That can be shortened to DICK, right?

You may have once commanded a lot of respect, and I guess there are plenty who will disagree with me (and anyone else who has a comment), but not actually ever having seen Tims truck in the flesh, much less when it is on a run does not I feel give you the right to make the comments you did with the undertones of "I am the god of everything 4wd and off road"

Tim, you are (as you know) welcome on any of the trips that cantab rock boys have in the winds, and we will show you a good time  :P

You have got it wrong Rokhound. I have never claimed to be the "God of 4 wheel driving"

I made a comment at the start of this thread about the hieght of Tims truck which I still believe is Valid.

If you look at all the top trial trucks in this country they have a very low centre of gravity and for a reason.

I Personally think Tim is a good Guy and have been on a lot of trips with Tim and had a lot of good times but knowing how he feels was just giving my opinion which is obvious others think is wrong.

Anyway I have no ill feelings and will make this my final comment

Cheers Richard

Yep Okay Richard, I have obviously read it the wrong way.

But the COG is not something you can pic in pictures. Tim's rig is a single cab (obviously)and all the weight is therefore quite low with that. Having been in this truck on some nastyish off camber stuff I would say that is as stable (if not more so) than a std 60 series lux on std width axles.
But quite apart from all that is that as long as you (the owner/driver) knows where the points of balance are, COG is not as critical as some make out.
You and I both know that the best way to find out where these citical points are is to test it to the limit. As there has not been the chance for a lot of bum in the seat time for Tim, I reckon he is testing it in the quickest fashion you can, go beyond the limit and back it off from there.

Apoligies if I caused any offence.

tims truck is on par, height wise, for club truck/weekend trip type set ups.. richard, ya mentioned height is a valid point, yes it is. but there is a number of other valid points to cater to also...

ya cant really compare it to buggies.. horses for courses.. sure, sheffield was a trial set up thus possibly a more buggy orientated environment, but ya gotta give it a nudge with what ya got.. and when ya had ya jandal up it tim, all i saw was a smile on ya dial, pre and post roll!

When did this turn into Days of our lives? Isnt our sport about burning ourselves with welders, bruising ourselves with rocks and having a stupid big grin on our faces the whole time?
Tim your truck is awesome even though I've never seen it in the flesh, and from what I've seen in the past I have no doubt that you can drive the sucker.

How does the saying go................ If you cant say anything nice...... F#$k off!!!
