What size tank in my prado?

Post by Heath »

Okay filled up from the fuel light being on (although the gauge wasnt on E yet :? ) and only fitted 72 litres which makes me wonder what size tank I actually have.

I thought it was 90 litres (its a 96 prado SWB diesel - 90 series), if thats the case is my gauge faulty (how do I get that checked?) or is the tank only 75-80 litres?

How do I find out? had a look online and there is tonnes of shite on the five door but not much on the three door.

I am wondering if the gauge is out as I get 400km's on the top half of the tank but only 200kms on the lower half. It has a tank cover fitted which looks to be fine (not dented).

I want to get the most out of this wagon but dont want to run it dry and maybe stuff something in the process.

Help, what do I do? Where can I go to get it checked?

All the toyotas we've had have a huge reserve on the empty light. My Dad's camry has a 75 litre tank in the handbook, but has never taken more than 60 litres when the fuel light goes on.

That's what I thought they were. What sort of mileage do you get out of yours from fill to fill? I get about 600KMs from full to light on but that seems too low. I must have a reserve of at least 20 litres in the tank which is about another 160kms.

Might have to get the sender looked at next time its in for a service, will have to get it in while its nearly on E and see if it's right. I have a sneaking suspicion its bent slightly too high so its is reading low. I figure the top half and the bottom half should be about the same as the tank looks to be almost symetrical in shape. so 360kms per half should be about right (760 is a fair way).

Might take a few goes to get it sorted I guess. Maybe a stick to measure the depth then figure out what percentage the depth is and adjust the sender to suit. perhaps just do it alongside the tank... Just got to make sure I am not going to run dry.

Likely to be different however my -71 series Prado (SWB) is 75 litres. Well it was when I got it but now the bottom kinda looks a little higher and somewhat bumpy!!
Still regularly putting 72 litres in it though.

Light comes on at about 65, I think

I use the lead in my right foot and often get 420k including some tough off-road over 20k's and a lot of Non Officer Plod type open road...
Last week I saw 500k's for the first time in ages. was two weeks around town.

I have the same SWB RX and have been suspicious about the tank capacity. All the specs say 90 litres but even when running it to empty and fuel light on for quite a while, I have only managed to get a bit over 70 litres into it. I had the same issue with an earlier model SWB Pajero. The SWB turned out to have a 15 litre smaller tank than what the specs said. Makes sense the SWB tank is smaller given there is less room at the rear. I've taken to carrying a 10 litre can with me and if it runs out, I'll soon figure out whether the tank was 90 or 75. The good thing is the diesel pressure primer pump is located on top of the filter so there will be no problem with priming. If you find out, I'll be keen to know the result.

All the websites I have seen say 90 litres.
Toyodiy.com shows the 5 dr and 3 dr as having the same tank part number.

I would just run it dry (take a jerry can eh) and fill it up....
Then you know for sure.
Bleeding is easy as pumping the plunger on filter a few times and start her up.

Even easier than that, I just wind mine over on the starter for about 30 sec and she fires up. These systems are self bleeding and having run out more times than my fingers over the years, I have never had any problems with restarting. Nothing in there that will stuff out.

I put 82 litres in my LWB the other day after driving for about 80km with the fuel light on. The the gauge drops quicker under the half way point

Old man's prado does the same thing. First half of the tank gets 400ish ks, second half is a lot less. Seems a lot of toyotas do this

600kms from 72ltrs? Is that around town or caning? Because I'd be hoping for like 700km from that much cruising, 800kms can be easily achieved from a tank cruising normally in a LWB with over 300000ks. Mates SWB model runs at 8L/100km open road.

mixture of round town and open. Does seem a little high but not too bad.

As an addition I am running slightly bigger tyres than std so maybe that will be a factor in the figures too.
