The Question. 1UZ Auto or Manual

Post by T-Boon »

So looks like i`m finally going 1UZ, but the question is do I go Manual Trans Or Auto Trans ?
The Surf in it at the moment is Auto so i can use that, or i have the full Manual Conversion outta the old truck.

Pro`s of Manual:
Good Downhill Engine Braking
Can Keep Aircon

Con's of Manual
Cant chop 1st on hillclimbs
Harder to start on an incline slowly without riding the crap outta the clutch
Have heard they can be "Jerky" ?
Cant Change Gear underwater?
More expensive by about $1500-2K (Clutch, Flywheel, Belhousing)

Pro`s of auto
Easy Hillclimbing gearchanges and slow starting
Can change to 4wd while moving
Easyier to get non LSD's to spin both wheels with the application of the brake
Shitload cheaper (Pretty much bolts on)

Cons of Auto
Not as much drive input requires (maybe not a con)
Not much engine braking downhill (must use a lot of brake)
Harsh changes in low range
No kickdown with the conversion. (have to use the stick manually if you want it to rev out)
Chops through the gears quickly into top gear (supposedly)
Cant Keep Aircon

Anything i`ve missed?

At this stage i`m prolly leaning towards Auto, but hold onto the manual Conversion incase I change my mind.

Who has what ?

i have an auto in my club truck and a manual in my winch truck, both are good, but prefer the auto.
you can lock up the converter to eliminate engine breaking problem, also wiring up to Manual shift, to stop change up.
lock up mod very simple a relay, diode, switch and a couple of wirings.
everyone has a different opinion, but till you have driver an auto offroad,
being so simple its hard to go pass.
retired 4wd to a ford ranger and UTV

if i were doing it id go auto, everything just seems so much easier to drive through where one of my mates is tryna chop through gears through bogs and uphills and it tries to skid, might be alot easier of your front diffs too, coz they suck too replace as we both know

i building an auto 1 at the moment. almost finished just needs exhaust and wiring. mate also has an auto 1. i went for auto as easier to drive off road, cheaper to start with as most 1uz come with auto and an auto surf transfer bolts straight on, nicer on diffs and cvs .yes u can still have aircon Manuel or auto.

From what i`ve heard the auto sits a touch further forward, so have to run a celica radiator, but with a 16" fan on the front, right where the aircon radiator sits.

Any info on how to get around this.

Those shifters look pretty cool. is the Rail shifter similar to the Baja shifter?
Got any images of them in action ?

That gives you an idea of the size, Id probably go with the baja if you have room.

How i`m doing it is ...

1UZ comes complete with box, this bellhousing bolts straight onto the hilux auto, so to get it to work you need to keep the 3VZ Auto and wiring, run a tricky Dual ECU wiring setup to work the box with the 1U, and use the hilux box with the 1U torque converter and bellhousing, then the only downside is the auto will change quickly through the gears, hence the shift controller and you loose your kickdown.

If that makes sence.

Those shifters do not have any engine braking (if they are the same as when I looked at them last year). So be careful you know what you are getting.

i've got a manual in my LJ71. 1-uz & auto bellhousing, custom flywheel, adaptor plate to 2l-t manual box.

i should've changed it to auto. Throw on gearbox is too long to get a run a t anything. by the time you've hooked low-3rd you've stopped. would be a damn sight easier for low speed stuff too.
