you doing it yourself or paying someone else? Makes a big difference price wise to both of your options. I'd imagine that overall it would be cheaper to fix what you've already got. Cause with an engine swap theres always hidden extras that you don't budget for plus certification at the end. So unless you want to put a nice big V8 into it  :D i wouldn't bother with a swap. Just my opinion though

Cost me around $5k to do my V8 transplant
... engine, adaptor, clutch plate, pressure plate, modified carrier and bearing, gasket set, re-cored radiator, power steer pump, hydrolic guy to hook it up, transporter to exhaust guys, headers, exhaust system, holley rebuild, new HEI, oil, antifreeze, hoses, misc paint bolts wire ties belts etc, certification.... sure there was lots of other stuff that cost money as well?

Where abouts in Ch Ch are you? Could have a look if you are keen, would look at doing strip/assemble and take head to specialist (i use Cylinder head specialists) got my 3B head planed, valve seats etc all fitted up ready to install (including a replacement valve) for about $220.

Don't go past checking out the new price of a bare head from the Toyota agent. Sometimes they surprise you.

But I think your best option is to look for a 2lte motor complete from a wreck, repower or simalar.

Dont know if this will help, but...

I've got a seized 2L (non turbo). I'm told the 2L and 2LT are identical except for the turbo. (Feel free to correct)

The head may be ok, but I wouldnt know. If the engine is "seized", is it likely it's buggered the head? As far as I know, it was running (owner was out driving) and it just locked up tight, no warning.

If someone can shed any light on the subject, I'd be willing to let the head go cheap..... :D

don't think they are the same... similar, but some differences in the manifold bolts etc...

I think if you are a student you want to be looking for a good second hand motor... but its still going to cost you $1k or thereabouts minimum.

Engine swap is going to cost you $3.5k minimum depending what you choose (based on having to pay someone else to do it) For a 1JZ/2JZ option

Theres no simple solution, sorry... but really, if coin is an issue then you're going to need a job, and a second hand engine...

its cool i have decided to get it fixed properly. have rang round and have got a few quotes, ranging between 2200 and 2500. so are just goin to do it that way then i knw its right. rather than getting a second hand engin that may do the same thing next week.

one of the mechanics was saying that he would be puting a 3L head on instead of a 2l-t, he said it is ment to be stronger, is this true or is he just adding more to the cost?

Don't discount the engine swap idea.

Your old motor will be worth some money, ancillaries etc.

Your 2.5k top end rebuild will still leave you with a 2lt motor. If you were to get $500 for your bits and pieces, turbo, ancillaries etc, you would nearly have the money for a 6 cyl repower.

Is the prado a manual or auto because you could put a 3L=2.8 or a 5L=3.0 non turbo that would last a lot longer than any 2lte time bomb will

Yeah, I'd be very reluctant to spend $2500 on a 2LT motor... 'cos at the end all you have is an underpowered hand grenade (and thats from someone who LIKES Toyotas :P)

Check your other options befoire shelling that cash out...

I take it that you aren't interested in my 3b and box etc then. you were asking about it on trademe.

just spent the weekend swapping it out for a 1pz, nothing is ever as simple as it sounds. depending on the rest of the truck i would think about putting the rego on hold , buying a five hundy shitter to get round in for the mean time.
and waiting to see if something turns up in the buy sell or on trademe. never know when some one will roll over and sell the wreck cheap.
i got the 1pz in a truck that was a write off, double diff locks, 50 mm old man emu springs , good late model manual box , pto drive......... and all less than the engine would have cost from the wreckers.
