got the other half of the spring mounts made today,
i got 2 bits of 50mm bar and bored a hole through the same size as the bushes, then got some rhs and drilled a 50mm hole through it then cut it in half and welded the 50mm bar into the 2 halves of rhs
and they come up like this
Image

and also put new seals and boots in the front calipers and gave them a paint and some new pads so teyr like new

just got round to doing a few little things today, had to get a new seal for the drivers front brake caliper then got it back together
after that i went and bought 2 new CV joints and put those onto the front axle
Image

then machined the rear axle where they bolt to the hub and polished the axle seal surface

also my rims and tyres are back at the tyre shop to swap the rims out to a -19 offset to get me some more clearance between the inside of the tyre and the chassis rail, i originally had +12 offset so this will space them out nicely

its been pretty slow progress the last few weeks have mostly been waiting on parts.
the tires are still at the tire shop awaiting their new rims, im getting -19 off set instead of +12 so they will stick out a fair bit more and save me having to use wheel spacers

and i have ordered the new shocks, i went for the rancho rs5000 as they are quite hard and should counteract the body roll i am expecting
but they had a mix up at 4wd bits and sent me 4 rear shocks so im still waiting on the front ones to come
Image

and the diff bearing kits have showed up finally so i got cracking on putting the diffs together

yeah cant wait to get it all together and see how it handles, ill get a fork lift under the tires (when they arrive) and where it lifts to the highest point thats where ill mount the shockies to allow maximum travel

i have now set myself a deadline, i booked the certification in for the 5th of december to get myself motovated to do get this truck finished

but ever since everything has turned to shit

went to put the front diff together and i both of my pinion nuts (inc the one for the rear)
so had to wast an hour or so to whip up some new ones but learnt my lesson and made them from high tensile
Image

then i started work on the shackel reversal
sorry for the low rate pics but it actually does look quite good in person
Image
Image
Image

then when i put the weight on this happened
Image

you can also see there would have been little upward travel aswell so i had to put the extra leaf back in :( bye bye ride comfort

then it was time to put the diff head in
Image

and now i have noticed the castor angle is wrong and the front driveshaft is too short so the front housing will be coming back out and ill be making a new drive shaft

have heard that the hanger should sit on more of an angle when weight is on. Think its round the 30-35deg from vertical. would help stop them from inverting like that.

jakwoo39 wrote:since im well over half way now i thought i would do a cost report up to this point

hi steer kit - $600
4 wheel bearing kits and 4 kingpin bearings - $290
8 cans of paint - $85
air locking diffs inc post - $1400
4.56 ring and pinion gears inc tax  $1150
getting springs reset - $400
Speedo Cable - $60
Speedo drive gear - $100
Spring bushes, brakes, brake rotors ect - $600
tires and rims - $2500
axels - $200

this is a rough estimate of what has been done since i started SOA conversion up till this point

and whats to come...
diff bearings
diff gaskets
shock absorbers
cert and WOF and reg costs
new front diff housing
spot lights

so as you can see i have made most of the major purchases already but i have already crossed over 10 grand owing counting buying it, but just doing the soa would not have been so expencive

Hi, Do mind me asking where you got your air lockers from? $1400 for both delivered seems a good deal.

Cool, thanks.

Whats the quality of the locker and compressor like?

Which one did you get? As far as I can find on the net, I'll need a RD142 for my 86 bj74, but not 100% sure.

Did you have to buy 2 full sets?

ahh i initially bought rd33 but they upgraded to rd142 just after i bought mine so i got sent rd142.
lockers look in really good nick cant tell the diff between an arb one and chinese when side by side.

only problem was i had to polish 0.03mm off the carrier bearing surfaces as they were a bit too tight for my liking

and the compressors are shit but they come free with a locker so cant whine too much

Throw a small intercooler on it.. I reckon mine ran heaps better with one. basically put a 90 degree bend at both sides of the pipe that goes across top of motor, piped to front. cant remember where the cooler was mounted and cant find an old photo.
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
