Any one want to get a GPS Tracker?

Post by nismo26 »

I'm looking at getting one of these

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-ph ... 209384.htm

I can get them for $175 plus shipping around Nz but need 10 people to get them at this price.

Post up if you are keen.

Last time I checked on Chinavasion they didn't have that model, I wanted it because it is semi water proof and has a 60day back up battery, There is also a Iphone app for it.

I sent a couple of emails off tonight to see if we could get a better price,

So around 160Nz each delivered if we buy 10 off Chinavasion.

Tax shouldn't be a problem every time I buy stuff from china they mark it down really low.

Having one should also lower the theft excess.

Yep they do cost quite a bit, these units also come with a relay and can be wired up to shut the truck down if needs be.

Just had a look again at that cheap one again and read

**This product is not waterproof and therefore is not recommended for outdoor use during heavy rain.**

So if you get one make sure its mounted somewhere where it isnt going to get wet.

and

**Each tracker’s IMEI number is unique and can only be used to setup the software on one computer once and ONLY ONCE, which means you can only use the software on that computer exclusively after successfully set it up. This is due to the security requirements of the software and the product. **

- sure there is a way to over come that one though??... would suck to have to buy a new one after you reload windows.

Food for though. Bunch of chinese GPS trackers here if you have a lower budget.
http://s.dealextreme.com/search/GPS%20Tracker

Have used this site for lots of other electronic gadgets which have all been ok quality. End of the day you get what you pay for.. but in general the products are the exact same things that Dick smith, Jaycar, first-in etc all pedal for a fraction of the price. Shipping is free too which is a bonus. Normally takes about 2 weeks from order to delivery.

just to double check before i commit to buying one...

i get a pay as you go sim from vodafone put minimum top up on it and then put it in the gps... every year i do the same until some f**kwit decides they want my truck/car. i then call the number and it send me the coordinates so i can go get it back?

does it continually use the money on the sim or only when you call it to find out the co-ordinates?

cheers

Yep you got it, only time it uses money is when it txts you back, you can also set a geo fence around it, if it gets stolen it will txt you that it has moved, so you don't have to wait till you get home, you can also shut the car down with a txt

interesting read on the manual :) with regards to the sim card side of things, i assume these are effectively a cell phone that can report GPS or locations as requested or setup, one assumes they are compatible with vodafone/2 deg or telecon?

with regard to mounting these things, with a remote aerial that needs a view of the sky that puts it either on the dash or roof mounted, if it is "cut off" by a scum bag does that render this useless? i am keen to get one but how do you fit it with out the scumbags knowing its there or them disabling it?

Cheers

maybe the aerial can be hidden in the side panels/roof lining

i think the gps aerials need a clear view of the sky, trees can upset gps so i would imagine a sheet of tin would block it nicely.

Depends on your dash. Metal will block GPS signals.

I can run a standard navman low in my dash, below the CD-radio player and it still gets 7 sat's. The dash is essentially plastic. This would mean I could conceal the antenna in the my dash and no-one else would know that it is there. Probably could put the whole unit in my glove box.

The one in my old skyline would work in my boot, in my garage with the door down, also put one in a mates car up in the dash and it would work fine.

The bummer side is that Jammers for gps trackers can be bought for as little as 20 drinking vouchers from Ebay etc, every good side of technology has a bad side unfortunately.

That said i'd still be keen for a tracker, it's about creating deterents to theft. My 1st 4wd (Terrano) was stolen in 2001 and never found to my knowledge. If those b'tards really want something they'll probably get it but i'm sure as hell gonna make it as hard as possible!

Only have to read the 'stolen' thread to see trucks that have gone and never found.

I think Vodafone is the only one that will work, 2 deg might work now, Telecom didn't work last time I tried.

Yea it is a down side to them, I was planning on putting a switch on my cigarette lighter socket, most of them seem to be the plug in type.

Depends who steals it really if its a pro they could have a jammer, or it could just be someone after some parts for their truck or some one out for a joy ride.

I want one to reduce my theft excess currently at $3000 and to have a chance of getting my truck back $160 seems cheap when you look at building another or trying to replace what you have.

the ign kill system could also be used to fire off ear splitting (hearing loss inducing) sirens/piezos/buzzers scattered around the vehicle, be a bit of a bugger if you trigger it on your self though :)
