importing ex millitary vehicles?????

Post by mr landrover »

hey been thinking about importing a unimog or something similer to turn into a decent 4x4 campervan from a overseas army auction has anybody done this before? wheres the best place to go? how hard would it be to get something into nz an on the road ? what sort of costs would be involved? any help would be appreciated
In order for you to insult me i would first have to value your opinion

They listed a number of NZ Army Mogs earlier this year, mid $30K I think they went for. Should have some more not too far from being released from service - drop them a message see what they say.. let us know the answer :)

There was a guy in Chch selling a U1700 chassis and running gear a while back - if you want a bigger project I think I still have his contact details.

Could be difficult to get past the emissions regulations.

Have a read of

that joker wanted like $15k or something stupid for that chassis.
would love a unimog. pretty unlikely to stay on their wheels. apparently the RL beddys they replaced were a million times more stable.
I'd buy an RLW winch truck in a second.

A pommy trucking mate was telling me there are alsorts of issues with trying to get overseas second hand trucks on road in NZ I'd ring up LTA might find that the only real option is ex NZArmy mogs
He did have a shortcut tho  (dodgy bastards them pom's) owner opperator can bring a truck over dodging most of the legal bs if imigrating, don't know if thats going to be any help

you'd be surprised how many pom imported trucks there are kicking around on our roads, though. they may have tightened up the rules recently, though. the y definitely have when it comes to jap import trucks which is essentially same shit different bucket.
you might get around it if it's a 'special interest' type of thing though.
or buy an ex shit flicker/fert spreader but they're usually a fair bit bigger than a unimog.

can't you get around things if you own it for a while first i.e. buy something do a tour for a few months then bring it back
my 4wd is not a truck

old mercedes never die but sometimes they do need some love

older cars are good, mercedes are better, older mercedes are the best

Theres the nz military vehicle collectors club. I'd try them first. I know a couple of their members are always bringing vehicles in. Both wheeled and tracked from all necks of the wood. They will know the legalities of getting stuff on the road. I've seen a couple heavy vehicles made road legal that have been imported.

If you do want a Unimog for camping I would go for a 1300L they were lighter and a bit smaller with all the same features as the 1700L, bit less power due to being non turboed but when lightly loaded they went pretty much anywhere. Problem was because they were smaller they were always loaded to the max and so were not performing well hence the reason NZ army phased them out.
Most got turned into fert spreaders or post rammers where again they were loaded up to their max so people thought they were tippy or not very good.
But a camper tray is a light load and they would be perfect match and if you can get one to tip you would need some big big hairy rams nuts.
I used to be a Diesel mech in the army and Unimogs were a million times better than Bedfords. Hard as nails and not to many problems with them(normally just the drivers faults) but parts can be a bit pricey.
Plenty of 1300L models around but most have had the arse thrashed out of them by now(army got ride of them early 90s) with none of the stringent maintenance that the army did.So pick your truck carefully.

I would love a Russian 6x6 as they are weapons offroad and have looks that would make a Yeti run away.

My 2 cents worth hope it helps
