Help needed urgently - West Auckland

Post by Filthy4x4 »

Hey guys,

Urgently need to get my truck running.

Its a 2LT surf, manual.

Just put a new alternator in it and replaced the belts, now it wont starts its like it has a flat battery so we hooked it up to another car and left it running for about15mins and its still not turning over any better.

The battery gauge says it has enough to start it but as soon as you try turn it over the battery level drops to 0 even with another running car onto it.

Any ideas? or anyone that can come and help me asap? Will supply beers for time

Im supposed to have been at a mates 21st like 3 hours ago

Cheers

Caleb

Yea I have checked all earths. I never touched any when taking it apart as the alternator mount is earthed. Everything is back on where it came from.

I give up for today, will try again tomorrow

Have you tried another battery - might have a dead cell?

when you say you checked the earths did you take them all off and give them a clean up and put them back or did you just visually look at them, did you check the positive HT lead as well?

Agreed, try another battery, or get it load tested.

most likely when the last alternator started to die it would have started to kill the battery and now it f like my surf did so most likely get new or try another

I cleaned the earths with brake cleaner, on starter, batt and alternator.

I have borrowed some gear off Simon and have done a battery test, its coming up with 12.37v then when tested says Bad & replace so I grabbed the battery out of flatmates honda (330cca not sure if this is enough or not) it turned over a little better but then still did the same thing.

The volt meter also dropped when under load. I have tested the starter motor also and its reading 12.37v there also.

Im unsure whether to go grab a new battery or not yet if it is something else causing the problem.

Iv run out of ideas

I just went out and got a 600cca batt. It turned over and did the same thing again, then the next time it cranked a bit faster was just about to give up on it but gave it one last try and it started first pop :?

Now theres a lovely screeching sound (sounds the same as a shot release bearing does) coming from the alternator or something around that area.

I cant figure out what it is or exactly where its coming from so wont be driving it til I can sort that out

Sounds like the belts are slipping.....

You will need to remove. clean / scotchbrite your connections....Especially the earth.
Both on the cables and where they bolt to.....
Earth leads to engine block too....As that's where the starter gets its earth.....

I had similar issues with dirty corroded battery terminals...
They would start great, then the next just click click click.

Are the terminals on the new alternator and the old one the same configeration(+ & - ),if they are the wrong way round the alternator will run on full power thinkin the battery is flat, that will cause screechin through belt slip

I thought it could be the belts slipping but its sounds like a metallic kind of sound like something thats supposed to be spinning isnt spinning properly or its touching something else metal.

It starts first time everytime now its just this noise I need to sort out

It never ends

Im not too sure dude, iv never had to touch an alternator before this

The plug on the new one was different so i took the plug off the old one and swapped the bit that has the contacts on it over. So im not sure if thats changed anything or not, the belts are done up fairly tight maybe just over 5mm play in each one.

Theres definitely something not right with the wiring as a couple of the dash lights are staying on when its running (batt light included).

Me and electricity have never been good friends, I hate trying to fix things that are invisible

I may have to get someone to look at it, this sort of thing is out of my league

I thought it could only go on one way :? im pretty sure I put the plug unit on the say way as the one I took off. It may not be earthed properly or something as it was slightly different.

Should I try tightening the belts as well? How tight is too tight?

If the plug was different there is a bloody good chance that the wires could be different too

Right problem is now solved, HUGE thanks to Simon (sibainmud) for pulling apart the alternator and diagnosing the problem as a rooted front bearing then replacing for me

So it works all good then?
The bearing was the easy part. I was more worried about the regulator connections :?
You're most welcome.
We won't mention the Charade wheel bearings either
