hi just after your opinions on transfer case mounted handbreaks
do these fit the ln130 auto transfer cases? will it be strong enough for cert/wof on a truck running 35" muds and 4.88 diff ratios?
or would i be better of going for a hand brake built into calipers? will this be strong enough for cert/wof?
wanna go disk brakes in the rear end of surf.
cheers guys

Re: transfer case mounted handbrake or caliper handbrake
dunno if your meaning a drum or disc transfer (carden) handbrake? I've had plenty of old trucks with drum carden handbrakes and they have always been full of weeping oil and shit and never held, my current 40 series cruiser had a disc setup on the back of the transfercase before I brought it and it had been rebuilt a few times before it got removed and abandoned, I brought it without a handbrake and when I was talking to Howie about handbrake options he told me to go calliper handbrakes for reliability so I dont have to worry about catching the carden disc on shit and buckling it or knocking it off etc, he didnt seem to be a big fan of them, we ended up swapping my rear callipers over to subaru with handbrake levers the same as my other truck and the handbrake works fine. The Subaru callipers are getting a bit old and long in the tooth these days but they are still easy to find (and only $13 or $15 each at pickapart) and theres also lots of alternative callipers with handbrakes you can look at using

ive heard some people have problems come wof time with calipers not holding enough pressure with big tires. do u find them fine for wof brake pressure and gen use offroading?

i am sure there is a thing in the cert manual about carden shaft hand brakes only being legal if they were fitted to the vehicle originally

Parking brake systems
2.3(28) All low volume vehicles must be fitted with a park brake system

moving parts of the vehicle; and
(b) securely fastened.
2.3(30) Modifications to parking brake cables fitted to low volume
vehicles must be carried out by suitably experienced professionals
using components and attachment methods purposely designed
for parking brake applications.
2.3(31) Low volume vehicles must not be fitted with a cardan-shaft
parking brake system unless the vehicle is equipped with a dual
circuit service brake system.
2.3(32) Low volume vehicles must not be fitted with a hydraulically
operated parking brake system.
2.3(33) Parking brake lever assemblies must be located and attached onto

Re: transfer case mounted handbrake or caliper handbrake
I used 90-91 V6 maxima calipers and solid alxe hilux front discs. Bracket is flat 10mm plate and pics up 3 of the 4 hub bolts. simple mod to caliper lever (as in weld a piece of 30x6 flat into it) and you can use the factory hilux handbrake cable. I can overdrive it in low range when the brakes are full of crap , but cant drive in high range. (auto box)
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

yeah mate the handbrakes on both trucks are really strong and paticularly my flatdeck cruiser coz the handbrake cables are running in a straight line to the handbrake lever without going around any corners, my flatdeck truck the handbrake lever only comes up about 1/4 from the floor to lock the back up tight. The way my 40 series cruiser handbrake lever is the cables had to bend up around to reach it and I didnt quite end up with the same clamping as my flatdeck but it still came out a really good strong handbrake. Theres different ways of setting up the cables, both of mine are setup using the individual subaru cables connecting to an equaliser bar then crimped on to the origional cruiser handbrake cable. With calliper handbrakes working on the disc pads you also get the advantage of being able to clamp the calipers up with the footbrake before you pull the handbrake lever up to get a good bite rather than just relying on the cable to pull everything up

Flatdeck cables running straight to the handbrake lever

40 Series cruiser cables having to turn up into the handbrake lever
