2L V6 Vitara smokey

Post by mudbugga »

Hi all
I've got a problem with my wife's Vitara. It's blowing blue smoke real bad on start-up and after it's been idling then you drive off. :(
It's been fine until last thurs. Never used oil before.Just all of a sudden got smokey. Timing chain has been a bit noisey but not too bad (it's already had new chains about 2 -3yrs ago).
Does it sound like valve stem seals?
What are like to do on these H20A V6?
Is it really worth fixing or do I find a second hand motor?
Ideas please.....

Valve stems would be my first guess.

Maybe the crank/engine block vent (cant remember what it's called) is pushing oil through to the manifold. Check to see if there is alot of oil in the intakes and check the line isnt full of oil (maybe put a catch can on if it is the problem)

Breather hoses fine. No blow-by or excessive breathing out of breather etc. Thats what makes me think its stem seals.
It looks like a mission to do though. Gotta take off front cover etc and chains to get cams out then get to valve springs etc.
Anyone done these before or is it not worth it?

i recently but a new motor in my v6 zuki because turoa put 2 holes in the side of the block, it wasnt cheap or easy to got a h20a so we got a rubuilt one from tepuke parts, price up the parts for reubuilding your motor compared to another motor, but id say its cheaper ti fix yours

Motor on tard me me at the moment . I have a vague recolection about these motors prone to blocking some passage in the head , to do with oil flow .Can't remember the exact details thou , helpfull eh  . Wonder if its blocked and trapping too much oil in the rocker covers thus out the valve guide seals .

Cheers for that.
Bloody thing now is only blowing smoke sometimes. Missus uses it most of the time and tells me it was ok all of yesterday but today it started doing it again. WTF!!! I think it's trying to deceive me. Making me think something funny happening. :x
What was the story with the oil port? in head that can block up?
Just some more info ... I only use castrol professional oil (from work- score!) 10w40 magnatec. Changed every 5k with filter. Have tried now a different oil in it since Sat (rx super) to see if it helps.

I've found the problem! :D
There is a factory modified new LH rocker cover and PCV valve that is needed.
The oil gets in between the r/c and breather splash plate inside and the oil gets hot, vapourises and gets sucked into the intake through the pcv valve. The factory fix is a modified r/c and pcv valve ($440+GST). The cheap option is remove LH rocker cover and dill some holes in the splash plate to let the oil drain out.
I'm going to give the cheap option a go. Will let know what happens.

Did the cheap fix this avo. Will see what happens after a few days. Was quite a bit of oil trapped behind cover.
Gave it a good clean out with white spirits. Hopefully it's fixed - cross my fingers. Will update later.

Maybe I saw you going south past me on the motorway at Tawa last Friday? It was a V6 smoking quite badly at 100 kph.

Yep looks like it. The vit was dark green and grey. The body looked pretty mint. Could be a great project if he doesn't know about the valve cover.

Gave the zooki a good run today and NO smoke!
Will keep an eye on it over the next few days to see if my fix will sort it.

Ebay or trademe for the timing chain kit and drill holes in the splash plate to fix the smoking problem. If its too poked drop a H25a into it.

Hey all.
I have just done another of these smokey H20A V6 engines .
You will also find that the intake has a fair coating of tarry bitmenous oil residue . This will keep burning off long after you have modified your rocker cover and replaced the PCV valve , therefore thinking the problem is on going.
The fix is to clean out the intake system ,
Can use loads of carb cleaner , Turps , petrol or anything to soak and disolve the gung.
If you dont clean it out it will still heat the gung up . vaporise it , as it cools it runs down into the intake and is sucked into the combustion chamber on start up and hence the blue smoke billows .

Make sense ?
