1998 Nissan Terrano (Auto, QD32ETI) surges
Hi there, my 1998 Nissan Terrano (Auto, QD32ETI) surges when i accelerate from a stand still. When i put my foot on the accelerator the truck takes off and instead of a smooth take off the truck (or trans) surges or misses for a second and then it runs fine. It happens most the time (80-90%) but does not do it 100% of the time. I have also noticed when doing ~80km with the rev's just under 2000 (with OD on) the truck surges like the trans is trying to figure out whether is should kick down. I haven't changed the trans fluid or filter. Can anyone shed some light on this for me or point me the right direction for info?? thanks!

A guy I worked for had one of those, and had the same sort of issues. First step is to get a diagnostic computer hooked to it to see if there are any ECU or TCU faults present.
His one had a problem with the torque converter lock up valve and ATF temp sensor buried deep in the trans
Hope it helps a bit.
Cheers,

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Also possibly an EGR (Exhaust gas recirculation) fault. I had same symtoms in my TD27 when it gunked up from EGR soot.

Spoke to a Nissan wrecker out South and he reckoned it's the speed senor/revolution sensor in the tranny on the fritz?? Looks like i need to drop the box out to access this sensor...or according to the workshop manual drive at 30km/hr while testing the voltage between TCM terminal 25 and ground. Voltage should be 1V (AC)....

Did a bit more digging and found this thread in another forum describing some of my tranny symptoms. Anyone interested follow this link and scroll down about half way (or read all 6 pages).
Will try disconnecting the revolution sensor (as advised in these posts) and see what happens. Sounds like a relatively easy fix to a pain in the arse problem

Hey I had this problem with our 98 Terrano and it was the injector pump and it isnt a cheap fix.
Re: 1998 Nissan Terrano (Auto, QD32ETI) surges
Anyone know if injector pump problems would show up as an error code on the ECU?

Hey, ours certainly did show up with the diagnostic check. It got to the point where we actually needed a new injector pump housing as it has been damaged also. It pays to get it fixed sooner rather than later as it will save on gearbox wear and tear. You will also get better fuel economy with the goveners reset properly.

Well, it ended up being the injector pump. Got it fixed ($2K) and its running fine now!
