Overseas SCAMMERS

Post by contour »

just got a random txt from someone wanting to buy my truck.
they asked for me to email them so i did.
they replied straight away with

Hello,
Thanks for getting back to me, so sorry that i couldn't call you due
to the nature of my work as a Sailor, the best way to get a hold of me
is through this email, What is your asking price for this vehicle
because i am getting this car for my father in law, I am presently in
Malaysia where i work based on job transfer. You can get back to me
with more pictures of the car. I will be handling the pick up of this
merchandise through a legitimate shipping agent that has their
headquarter situated in Malaysia and the Pick up agent will handle all
necessary document needed to get the car shipped from New Zealand down
to Malaysia including the transfer of ownership, all they will require
of you is your signature. The pick up will be arranged right after the
payment has been made to your account and the only way i can make the
payment for quick sale is through PayPal because they will ensure a
safe transaction for us and they will also arrange the pick up agent
that will pick the car from you after the payment.

Jennifer

then

Thanks a lot.I have read everything about the car on the website and
everything is okay by me. I have actually tried to get this car here
earlier from here but most of the ones I got either have one huge
mechanical fault or the other and some have even had accidents in the
past while some are extremely exorbitant cost-wise. As to the price,
Your Price is Ok. So if you think the offer good is enough, I will
bevery glad to make the payment asap through my PayPal account as I am
currently offshore and you don't need to worry about the paypal fees
because i will handle that. paypal is the best.secure and fast
payment method online. It is easy to register an account, just go to
http://www.paypal.com and register for an account. About paypal, PayPal is
the best online transfer for receiving money worldwide, you can
register an account with PayPal with your bank details or credit card
and if you don't even have any, you just register and once the payment
has been made paypal will email you and ask you how you want to
receive money, so any transfer you made with your PayPal goes through
to your bank account, it is free, safe and reliable. After you have
registered for PayPal account, all i need is just the full name with
the email address of the PayPal account to transfer the fund and once
the payment has been made, they will contact you and notify you about
the pickup details and the shipper's information after the payment and
you also don't need to worry about theRego because it is not useful
here and the transfer of ownership will be arranged by the pick up
agent organized by Paypal.

PS: You will be getting your cleared funds before you release your car
to the shipping company so there's no need to be curious.Just setup a
paypal account on paypal's official website at http://www.paypal.com.au
Kind Regard

Paypal is used all the time, I have a Paypal account and use it to buy stuff from the states, also customers use it to pay for parts that i send overseas. Theres nothing wrong with Paypal.
The emails do seem doggy though.

Yeah its a scam. My old house mate had the exact same email, pretty much word for word, sent to him when he was trying to sell his bmw. Apparently they send the money but are then able to get it back somehow by claiming the goods aren't in the condition you said they were but by then the car is long gone.-this is what he told me tardme told him.

Im sure many people who are desperate to sell fall for it.

cheers

If you have doubts about someone paying by Paypal then withdraw your money from Paypal to an NZ bank before sending the goods. Paypal can and do freeze or return money when there is a complaint regardless of any proof either way. They can also be very slow to respond to emails.

the other variation of this thats been doing the rounds is they ask you to pay "transfer fee" "dock fee" etc so their "shipping agent" can send the vehicle.
of course there is no "shipping agent", your vehicle goes no where and you loose the fee.

scam a lot of people for small amounts adds up to large amounts.

What was the number they texted you from?

I just got one too for my Ute, the number was +502.

Asking about the interior condition of the vehicle.

I've replied, see where this guy wants to lead me.

Yep the scammer emailed back pretty promptly, and guess what? He wants to buy my Ute for the amount I want and wants to pay by Paypal and wants to have it shipped.

I got the warning email from Trademe too.

Man some people are gutless pricks.

I have just received an email from Newbie according to the email address... funny thing is that I was BCC'd into the email... below is the email I received....

Hi,

My sincere regrets for this sudden request, the situation i found
myself made it inevitable.
I made a trip to Valencia in Spain, unfortunately i was mugged by a
gunman.I lost my
valuables including mobile phone and credit cards. I had to contact my
bank to cancel
all my cards, right now i need your help flying back home.

Am cash strapped at the moment. I've made contact with my bank but the
best they could do was to send me a new card in the mail which will
take 3-5 working days to arrive here. I need you to lend me some money
to sort myself out of this predicament, i will pay back once i make it
out of Spain.

Western union or moneygram is the fastest option to wire funds to me.
Let me know if you need my details(full names/location) to effect a
transfer. You can reach me via email.

cheers Steve

Rather strange as my understanding is that Steve is still here in NZ...

Gee I hope Steve is ok.
Maybe we should all chip in and send him some money.
I'd hate to think he would have to miss a meal...

Bit of an update with steve. My correspondence. Going to try and get an ore tattoo on him. Don't mind the language, trying to set him up.

Hi,

It is unbelievable to see myself in this situation.I never know i will
be mugged in a place like spain.I really need your help to get back
home because currently i'm in a hotel and my bills are going high
everyday.I would have loved you to send me the money in my account but
since i don't have my credit cards with me and my bank does not have a
branch here in spain,it will be difficult to get the money.I prefer
you send the money to me in my name through western union money
transfer that is the fastest way i can get the money here. All you
need do is go to the nearest western union agent location, usually at
the nearby post office, and request to make transfer to me in Spain,
you can get the address of a nearby location from the website
www.westernunion.com and use the details below to make transfer to me.

Receiver Name: Steve Abernathy

Address: Plaza del Ayuntamiento, 46002, Valencia ESPAÑA

You will need to email me the western union mtcn number or scan, attach
and send the western union payment slip to my email as soon as you
make transfer so I can receive money here.

Thanks

Poor bloody Stevo,

Tell you what. I have just inherited several million dollars from my Uncle who was a King in Nigeria, from the province of Burger, I think you may know him well, so I would really like to help you out. How about I send you on a Cruise Ship home with spending money, the least I could do. To transfer the money though you will need to send me a tanfer fee by paypal, lets say $10k US to be sure. I will then transfer the money in to your credit card account, you will need to give your credit card details as well though.
