new spring for Pajero V6 SWB + height control

Post by paj94 »

Hi, is there any one can help me for piece of advice?

I have got V6 Pajero (1994) recently and this has got air compressor powered height control. It will lift 30mm in font and 40 mm in rear under 50km/h.

Compare to other one I have got in past, the height of rear and front is slightly lower about 1 inch or so. So it claims to improve stability in on-road. However, the ride of this rear suspension is terrible and to hard and bumpy. I fit 31x10.5R15 Bridgestone At 694 and it improve a little but still harder than a normal suspension model.

I have a question, what is the normal height of this height control fitted model? Is that normal that lower than normal suspension model? I suspect someone in the past owner make it lowered...

The next question is that is that possible to change coil on the rear to improve ride without changing that standard 3 stage shock?
Should I stay in same height or can I lift it a little as 20~25mm, just for make enough travel in bumpy on and gravel road?

Thanks for advance,

Hi there, Bit of follow-up.

I found this Pajero has KYB shocks (I can not check the parts number).
The SMH switch in cabin is just changing the indicator on the dash and do nothing else.

Boy it is a hard dumper!
I guess some past owner in Japan must be turned for street only use.

Now, I want change this KYB to something else.
This time I do mid for occasional off-road use.

I am asking quote for original to Mitsubishi but same time I want to see some 3rd party solution. I’m looking at ARB OME kit and Tough dog adjustable as a candidate.

Is anyone has some experience or suggestions?
I do not need too much lift up.

hi, i have got a \'93 v6 swb pajero and i also have air shock\'s mein give me about 2 extra inches.. on both front and rear, i was thinking about having it liftd in the furture but i have been told that i would prberly have to lose the air shock\'s. as for the s/m/h sus settings have you looked to see if there is a fuse out?

Thanks Padero,

In my understanding, the air suspension bag is fitted just above the spring.
I\'m kind of hoping I can keep it, I will check when I got garage people to talk.

There is no wiring to the shock so I think the shock was replaced sometime in the past...

I have about 9cm above the top of the rear tyre and outside arch. (About 5cm in front) Is this normal height to you? I also have concern if that was lowered...
My tyre is new 10.5x31 R15.

I can not remember the make of the original shock, but I guess it not from KYB.

HI, Do you have the 3.0 or 3.5 model? If its the 3.5 NJ model, these came out from factory with a 30mm body lift to clear the bigger gearbox.

Mine is a 94 SWB with 3.5 and a manual. I have the s/m/h setting which still works, the shocks (all 4) have a hose going into them and when flicked the switch you can hear the air or whatever they are. I do find them pretty firm, it does not have the height adjustable suspension you talk about thou.

ah, I have just looked at your sig and see its a 3.0. it will sil lower from factory than the figures I have below.

Mine as standard has 180mm rear and 130mm front from top of tyre to outside of guard with 31\'s. This model will run 33\'s with no mods.

And again...

Just been out and taken the rear sway bar off. THe original shocks are KYB and also have Mitsubishi stamped on them at the bottom. There are 4 wires running into the top of them for the adjustment.

I to find it riding very firm, even on the softest setting, and notice very little difference between the settings. with the engine off but the key in \'on\' position flicking the switch is followed by some noises from the corners.

hope this helps.

the s/m/h setting arn\'t going to make much of a difference.. but i can tell when i have it in soft mode compared wiv hard... easy way to tel i found was to go ova a speed bump in hard then turn around and go over it in soft mode and see wot the differnce is not much i wudn\'t think but then again it\'s not hydrulics (carnt spell) so we carnt expect too much. and as for the rising of the sus i\'ll have to go out and measure how much it goes up by, when it stop\'s raining ! :(

Thanks guys,

Ok, the shock may be a original then, I will check if that stamped by Mittsubishi. I could not find wire going into the top but, I may be missed because, I just take wheel off and check from bottom.

The one I had previous (1993 2.8TDi) got quite bit of difference between S and H.
But hey, each one should have slightly different.

The firm felling may be a spring then...
I still think it is unusually low (in height)...

I will find time to go Mitsubishi sometime this week to check, if this is normal. :?

I just quickly check the rear again.
It officially (at least) not the original shock.
It is from the KYB (super in the red sticker) and no Mitsubishi stamp, no wire to anywhere.
I found disconnected socket that might be originally connected to the shock’s actuator.

To make it original setting, Mitsubishi have to find second hand parts since they can not fine new one in NZ. I was quoted around $820+ labour, and I found that is out of option. To spending nearly $1,000 to make original with second hand parts doe s not match to spend more with brand new set of respected aftermarket one.
Now, I have to find $$$.
I will think about few options and talk to the 4x4 expert at local Mitsubishi first.

NO worries,

I sure would be replaceing with aftermarket ones, give it some time and I\\\'ll have no use for mine, I\\\'d like something softer and more supple for off road.

Alot of the aussie guys are going for either Rancho or the Koni, if ya get the right ones it will enable longer travel, currently the shock won\\\'t let the spring compress right up to the bump stop. With the experience we\'ve had with adjustable Rancho\'s on the Defender i\'m not sure i;d be getting them.

as for 820 + labour - I think your wise not going for that option straight away! However I know the back ones are easy to fit, haven\\\'t looked at the fronts but they should be ok as well.

I had re quoted the price for standard shock and spring

Rear pare of shocks $195.00
Front pair of shocks $150.00
Rear pair of coil spring $65.00

The sales at there made mistake that is for each so the cost is 410 + labour.

Since my idea of TJM suspension kit was rejected, I will reconsider this option for shock replacement only. Lifting will be later by changing spring if I really wanted.

My Pajero was just confirmed (At the local Mitsubishi Dealer) that it has fitted with lowered spring as well.

Hopefully, it all back to normal height at least by end of next week.
Then I can check the height!

What size of tyres you’ve got padero?
I’ve got 10.5x31 for now, other wise it will hit the arch with this horrible lowered suspension.

Good one! :)

Mine is Bridgestone A/T 694 31x10.5 R15.
It's very good balance on road and occasional off roading that I normally do.

Paj94, good to hear you got ya suspension sorted, or at least you know what the story is, I have seen some lowered 4wd's and they do look a bit ridiculous :D - sounds like your gettiing yours sorted.

Tyres :D My standard are 31x10.5x15 as well, it was the factory size, similar to some which were 265/75/15 I think.

I'm intereseted in what other people put on, I had a set of BFG Mud Terrain 285/75/16's and 255/85/16's on it the other day, there was a little rub at the front under full articulation with the wheel turned, These tyres are the fractionally taller than a 33x12.5x15 but not as wide. I don't want the width of a 33x12.5 tyre. Clearance at the back was fine, whatever I end up getting I need at least an inch of 'spare' clearance for fitting chains. Me thinks a little chopping is in order! The beauty about the V6 is the power to spin em!

Ahh wonderful. I had a chat with Neville Bingham last weekend (I'm a member of the Central Otago 4wd Club) and he suggested contacting you guys. I'm looking to join another club to raise the amount of options I have. My trouble is that most of my work is short notice and so I end up not being able to go on trips at the last minute. So he suggested talking to you guys. But I was wondering where you run your trips, as I'm based in Wanaka.

Thanks,

Bill

PS: Have a good trip ;)

Thanks NJV6,

Yes, it's good to know the reason why I felt it was too low.
So, I can make it better and not too much for my needs.

I cannot undestand why people want to lower the 4x4 and not buying some corssover car insted like Subaru. :?: :?:

!t gonna be better in next week. :P

HI Bill, send me a private message about the club if ya like, save cluttering up the topic....... :)

I see your name on the CO4WD club list, My parents are members of that club too. We had a good camping weekend, weather held out, the trip was actually closer to Queenstown than Gore! :D

For the end of this story, I fitted brand new KYB shocks for all 4 and standard spring for 3L V6.

This gives me at least for the start point and I regained the normal ride height and comfort.

The shock is not adjustable but it’s good to know that is brand new set rather than already worn second-hand.
The price quoted for shock is 195 for pair of rear and 150 for pair of front and about 65 for spring pair (+ fitting and alignment).

I will consider adjustable shock set after I’ve down 40,000k+ with this setting. Most of manufacture may have new improved product by then.

I’m quite happy with the result with this amount of cost.
Compare to the badly compressed suspension that I had, I would say anything is better. :)
