TD27 engine reliability?

Post by naffa88 »

Evening all. I am thinking about puting a TD27 into a SIIa Landrover & was wondering what everyones opinion is of this engine?
If I do go with this engine I would also like to fit a nissan 5 speed box (maybe a nissan atlas) & connect that to the Landrover transfer box.
I see that there are non-turbo & turbo versions of this engine. Are the engines the same internaly or is the turbo one stronger in some way?
If anyone has fitted this setup to a Landrover before I would also like your comments as to how the instalation went & what it drives like.
Thanks

Very good strong engines in my opinion, Never really hear of many issues, By far superior to toyota 2lt's, The turbo versions have different pistons(not sure of strength differences) but Sibainmud turbo'd' a non turbo one and ran 17psi, And as far as i know never had any issues with it.

The let down will be the gearbox, if its the same or similar to a terrano gearbox, they are pretty weak..

TD27 possibly one of the toughest motors around. Just always attached to crap gearboxes.

Make good power too if you put an egt gauge in, up fuel and boost. Get a turbo one, non turbos are painfully slow.

The non-turbo ones can be turboed very easy as all the ancillary gear can be bolted on them. Good strong powerful engines with a few tweaks here and there. The non-turboed are exactly the same except for the size on the con-rods. The rods are slightly bigger in the amount of material used to cast them but the centres are the same. My old terrano was naturally aspirated but I bolted a turbo and manifolds on, wound up the fuel and at one stage pushed over 20psi down it's neck and it loved it. Still have the engine, but trashed the gearbox and body.

Put a strong box behind one and you won't be disappointed.
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
