Maratoto work on Sun 16 Oct

Post by PeterVahry »

Late notice, but there may be some 'able bodied' enthusiasts willing to help move, break and place rock at Maratoto on Sun 16. The aim is to repair a section about 700m from the gate and it's essentially physical labour.

Too many people will fall over each other so if you are able to help, email me on access@nzfwda.org.nz so there is some idea of numbers. Start time will be 10am Sunday at the ford.

Well there was only three of us today.. :?
But we tidied up what was done on Saturday.
A heap of rock (20 something ton) was moved in by trailer and deposited to restore the track.
And stop a nasty off camber bit.
The guys on Saturday did a great job... :D
The track was very slippery with all the traffic on it from Saturday.

I will let Peter V fill in the rest.

An excellent effort by all involved and that vital bit of trail is hopefully now secure. Much easier to fix before it all slid into the valley. There are still some areas that will need work along the Maratoto trail but they've had to wait until it was made safe to get a digger up the trail.
When will the gate open? Depends on the amount of rain over the next few days.

The first stretch is pretty good now but there are still some soft bits and at least one troublesome hole, so two vehicles or a winch.
The gate will open on Friday 21 Oct

Digger work is planned for before Xmas.

Maratoto phone service

Post by PeterVahry »

Because the weather and other problems can require that the Maratoto trails are sometimes closed to 4x4 use, it can pay to check the phone service on 027 5242132 before you travel.
