John's surf project v8 and SAS

Post by jonossiksilvia »

hi all

so a few years ago i had a 1990 v6 surf and due to some issues i had to sell it. but ever since i sold it i've wanted to build 1 from scratch - my ideal surf

so here it goes:

brought the truck standard early feb 2011

Image
Image

so after already owning 1 in the past i knew what i wanted to do to it

time to start only a week after buying it sent it to the shop

rip this stuff out

Image
Image

and throw this in

Image

half way through

Image

and this is the result which included lifting the rear to match, some manual converted prado fwh

Image
Image
Image

next was fitting a 40mm body lift

Image
Image

to fit 4 of these including a spare 35/12.5/15 creepy crawers on 15x8 rims

Image

result

next was to get ride of this peice of crap

Image

so 2 weeks after getting the truck back from the workshop this happened

Image

which resulted in this

Image

and this is whats going in

Image

so some time was spent getting everything ready to fit the engine:
replace cambelt, waterpump, idlers, tensioner, rotors
replace starter motor as old 1 was unable to be rebuilt due to seized bearing with brand new one
new accessory belt and bearings for idler and tensior
gut internals of hydro fan unit
rebuilt powersteer pump as was leaking
remove tail housing on 1uz auto and fit transfer case on
mounted handbrake on inside of firewall
cut off old engine mounts off of chassis
remove other parts from engine bay that were not needed

Image
Image

fitted the required driveshaft hoop for cert

Image

oil filter setup and a tee to use factory pressure gauge and also oil pressure warning light

Image
Image
Image

here is the cooling setup. powersteer cooler left, radiator middle and trans cooler right with own 7inch fan behind it

Image

and the fan controller

Image

the diesel cluster with a 2.0l 4 cylinder petrol tach fitted

Image

handbrake fitted on inside

heres a picture of the electric hubs that i got converted to manual. these are more reliable than the electrics. they also better than changing to normal manual hubs as they require a spacer to be made up which always snap hub studs

so the list of things to do has gotten smaller

fit the high speed winch - engineer mate making up mounting plate to mount it then can build rest of bumper off of it.
fit the aftermarket 4.88 r&p gears and locker for back
make up running boards
fit mates old rear bar setup
finish the last part of wiring motor already runs
make up snorkel
and go for cert
