Rust repair help

Gidday,
The other day I noticed the carpet in the passengers footwell getting wet, so I had a look and it turns out there a reasonable amount of rust under there.



I have never done any welding before, so I don't really know what to do. My flatmate has done a bit before and has access to a MIG welder at work and I got some sheet metal for a patch. Should the patch sit flush with the existing panel, or can i just slap it over the top and weld around the edges?

How do I go about painting the underside it once its in?
There is a body mount in the way, surely I wont have to take the body off. Is there a product that you can paint the steel patch first and then weld it in place?

I would suggest that you put this into a panel shop to get fixed, if you haven't done much welding and your flatmate hasn't either you are biting off more than you can chew....

Panel beating shops know how to fix this stuff.

I would agree that a panel shop is your best bet, if the wof inspector see's a less than professional job he may ask who repaired it and if they were qualified to do the repair.
If you decide to do it anyway flush will look better than overlapped but is a lot harder to do, i would maybe cut the rust back to the flat raised section in the right of your photo so the join will match up.
Also run a thinner wire in your mig if you can .6mm I find pretty good as you can run a low heat so you don't blow too many holes.
But if it's a bigger mig as small as you can.

I concur that that is not a job a beginner. Unless you specificaly wanted to get into doing that sort off thing. which I dont think is your plan. Take it to a pro just make sure you have a fistfull of dollars too. maybe find someone with experience to do on the cheap. could ask on here for someone local to you. It probably shouldnt have a wof like that either so you want a good job done. also to do that job you need a lot more tools than just a mig.

look at the drivers side you may find its not much different

Cheers guys, I like to think I can have a stab at doing all my own repairs, but it looks like i'll just take it in to the shop.
The drivers side is sweet as, it is the fault of who ever installed the snorkel. They did a shit house job of sealing the holes in the pillar, where the screws go in, so water trickles inside and pools up on the floor. A bit of silicon should fix that!!!
