Hey Guys
I brought this diff off trademe with intension of doing a disc brake conversion on fj40 after trying to get the right parts and then finding out from guys at toyota in lower hutt that its an early model 3 speed thats been converted and also has the old course spline cv and may not get a cert because of welded steering components. Toyota guy been very helpfull , told me to take it to Ken McAdam for advise but havn't made it there yet. Does anyone here know if it would get a cert?
Thanks Shane

Re: fj40 disc brake conversion help
My mate did one of those disc brake conversions in the mid 1980's with crown callipers, back then you couldnt get 60 or 70 series swivel housings with calliper brackets for a straight swap over conversion. Keep your eye on the 60 or 70 series auctions on TM and you'll pick up all the bits to do a better conversion than that one

Re: fj40 disc brake conversion help
Even if you get rid of all the stuff on your diff and replace it with 60 or 70 series components your still going to have a problem with cvs. Your diff has the early smaller coarse spline cvs and if you converting to 60 or 70series gear you need the later fine spline cvs which are bigger and dont fit in your early housing.
But you can make the fine spline cvs fit by clearencing the inside of you housing to suit, Ive used an air belt sander in the past because they dont need much.
Or the other option is get a later model 40 series diff housing that uses the fine spline cvs.

Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

for your brakes check out here (hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by posting a link to another forum):
- good writeup with good photos – shows how much grinding is required
http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-te ... -swap.html
- here’s one that I started - shows my ignorance but has good replies, some pics etc., ... and explains / clarifies on the terminology that they (on the ih8mud website) use for the different parts (not sure if Kiwi terminology is slightly different)

Hope this helps ;o)
