Tires and tire size Range Rover

Post by Geeknz »

Hi there, Im new to this site and 4wding i have a 83 range rover. since buying it i have fitted a injected 3.5l motor, ARB air locker (rear) 2" body lift 31x10.5x15 and a snorkel.
I keep having an issue with my diff head hitting the ground and was thinking of going to 35x12.5x15 Kuhmos or Maxxis tires. i know i will need to install raised springs and shocks, but does anyone know if the 35's will fit of if i should go 33"'s
thanks Dan

Hi Dan,

What part of the country are you in?

It will depend on how much you are willing to cut out of your guards.

If you fit 35inch tyre, you will need to increase your bump stops and brake lines and so on....

I run 35 inch MT-117 Xtreme Silverstone and have a 2inch body lift and a 4 inch spring lift. All my guards are cut back and I have fitted 50mm long shocks all round as well as lowering all my shock top mounting points by 70mm. I have fitted longer bump stops aswell.
You will need to either get castor correction bushes or a set of new cranked radius arms. I have stuck with castor correction bushes so that my drive line angle stay's straighter.

You can see my truck on you tube under "mudhog1974classic"

You should be able to run 33inch tyres with only a small trim of the guards. Rim offset can be a problem, I'm running Disco steel rims that have had the centres reversed which gives me 100mm wider track than standard.

I run 32inch Simex's with only the spring lift and a guard cut. :D

I will try and help answer any question you have about what you need to fit which ever tyre you decide on.

Cheers Brett

Thanks for the info Brett
I live in Hamilton
I have 100mm longer braided brake lines for it and have adjustable KYB shocks, but will need to get the bigger bumpstops. did you just move the shock mounts down on the chassis at the rear and install a spacer at the front or is there a kit out there for it.
What brand of springs did you fit.
I checked out your truck on youtube, i have checked it out once before when i first got mine and wanted my one to look like that !
I can see that you cut a fair bit out the guards front and rear, i don't think i will be able to cut quite as much on the rear of mine as it is four door. do you have to cut that much or could i go slightly less.
Can you recommend somewhere to get the castor correction bushes from.
thanks for all the help?

Hi Dan,

We have a few 4dr Rangies running 35inch tyres in our Club and yes you can get away with cutting less than I have out of the guards :D

I cut 70mm of my front turrets and had them welded back up and had new drop mounts made for the back so I could use the original holes.

My springs are from LRA in Aussie. 185lb in the front and 220lb in the back. I'm going to change them around and put the 220lb in the front and fit another set I have of 270lb in the back.
I have all the O/A sizes of them somewhere

I took my LPG tank out in the begining of the year and took the 270lb springs I had in out as I thorought I wouldn't need them with the tank gone :D but I is bottoming out more now and I'm going to swap them back.

LRS should be able to get you a set of castor correction bushes, mine came from LRA and you can't get them here anymore.

Repco or any suspension place that sells Nolathane brand bushes will order them for you

Hey guys
just starting to work on the rangy and had one more question.
do you have to lengthen the drive shafts when raising it 100mm (springs).

Also just getting some beadlockers laser cut to put on my wheels and have to change the offset of the rims too as the 35's are much bigger and reduce my steering lock so will let you know how that goes.

Generally no but you may want to consider wide angle drive shafts, which also have a longer sliding spline so can handle the articulation better.
You will also want to consider cranked rear trailing arms with that sort of lift as the chassis bushes will be strained with the angles.

You also need to consider your axles. Stock Range Rover axles are really a bit weak for 35" tyres. The ARB in the rear will solve the diffhead issues in the back but what about the front? The Rover halfshafts are still pretty weak. Are you still running 10 spline shafts or did you upgrade to 24 spline. HD shafts in 24 spline are common and are pricey but not for the 10 spline.
