Hilux Diff help....
Hilux Diff help....
Hello people.....need a bit of help as Im a little confused. I have a 2000 Hilux 2.7p 4WD.
The Axle Code on the Plate is A05B. From the Diff Code Tables I have found I think it means the following;
A = 138mm dia Crown Wheel
05 = 3.7:1 Ratio
B = ???
I have seen a few other threads here and there where they have contradicted the above info saying its a 4.3 G Series ??
Nittty gritty is I think I have to replace my front diff (will know after this weekend once I have pulled it out) and Im wondering what diff to keep my eye out for to replace it. Any help would be great....
Cheers
Dan

Re: Hilux Diff help....
The later hilux's and surf's have different codes from the early ones, My KZN185 has a similar code to your's but is actually a 4.1 G series.
Dont forget the code only applies to the rear diff as your front will be a 7.5" not an 8" (G) series.

Could also be handy.
Question...
Got 4.875 Diffs in the new Surf, Would going to the 4.3 and 33" tires be about right for gearing ? or is it the other way around? Got a feeling i`m completely backwards.

Re: Hilux Diff help....
Thanks for the info guys, still a bit confused though. One table says its a 3.7 and another says its a 3.15.
Question: Once I have opened the diff up, what do I count do get the ratio correct ??

count the no of turns pinion does to crown wheel, can be done with diff in place by counting driveshaft turns to wheel turns.
swb lux with 7mge, trailgear crossover, trailgear rear lift kit, custom front bar, runva 1200lb winch, custom snorkel, 37" Mtrs, custom deck, lockright in the rear.
Re: Hilux Diff help....
With diff opened up, count number of crownwheel teeth and divide by number of pinion teeth. Or look on crownwheel rim - you'll see the ratio stamped there.

Re: Hilux Diff help....
OK, I have just called Toyota NZ. Gave them my Reg# which brings up all my vehicle details, so they are definitely going off the correct info.
They tell me it has 4.3 ratio's. This goes against the Axle code specifications shown in all the Code Tables I have found. Go figure ??
So it would seem I have 4.3's, but he couldnt tell me the dia of the Crown wheel. Will the front and back be the same ?? or is the front smaller ??

Whats the full vin code...
If you goto toyodiy.com and view the diff section it tells you the ratio.
I had a look at a jap 2007 2.7 4 speed auto model...
http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_2007_T ... _4101.html
Says its a 4.55

the higher the number the bigger the tire you run,
e.g 31" = approx 4.1 ratio , 35" 4.8 ratio,

Yeah, i agree that that is what it is on that table, but it says a 3.7 on another table and Toyota say 4.3........
I will just pull it apart and count the teeth to be sure...........

Yeah, was pretty sure after a bit of thinking it was that way.

Not really. The v6's needed to rev higher at cruising speed than diesels did

Re: Hilux Diff help....
yeah my understanding is you choose tyre size and motor then adjust diff ratios to get rpm range correct to suit motor then change low range if you want to go slower again
i had 4.88s with my 35s dan t but that was with the piss pot 3ye,now ive got the v8 in their she was screaming her nuts off down the mway,ive tried 4.5s last time she was on the road but rpm @100 was around 2500,this time round she's getting 4.1s.this should make the motor a lot happier but offroad ill loose that little bit of torque so then i may head down the path of putting crawl gears in the transfercase.if im still not happy with road rpm while im putting crawl gears in ill look at getting hi ratio changed from 1:1 to maybe .9:1 or something along those lines as diff ratios below 4.1 are not easy to find at all
anyone feel free to correct but but i thought that was how it works

Re: Hilux Diff help....
OK, I opened up the Diff at long last, 5 teeth cracked off crown wheel. I can now confirm:
43 teeth on the Crown
10 teeth on the Pinion
= 4.3 ratio
The dia is 7.5"
So this goes to show the tables are all wrong in my case. A05B code means jack shit !! The only site that was correct was the www.toyodiy.com site, entered in my VIN and hey presto, 4.3. But it didnt give me the dia.
Thanks for peoples input.
Now im looking for a 7.5", 4.3 ratio Crown wheel for my Hilux's front diff. Any body out there got one ??
Cheers

I'm guessing, being a 2000 model, that it would have a reverse cut (high-pinion) 7.5" front?

Must be the LOKKA in the front that did it because I know how you drive, not like some of us other jokers

Bummer about the front diff.

OK, I didnt see this one coming. So does this mean the replacement has to be out of a 2000 model ??

Damned if I know, havent done anything serious for a while now, and I have been taking it easy on purpose lately to avoid any breakages cause I dont have the funds to keep fixing stuff. Oh well, these things happen, Im just hoping I get this all sorted out before the Mudfest on 4th Dec !! but these things always take me ages to fix and the weeks are flying by at the mo.......

If so, you'll need the reverse cut gears. I'm not sure what year they changed over, but the earlier model hilux's had a standard cut low pinion design instead. There's a couple of photos on that site I linked which shows the difference between the high-pinion vs. low-pinion housings, which should help you easily work out which type you have.
