Anyone have a winch near kumeu?

Post by Filthy4x4 »

Hey guys,

After heading out to my mates farm yesterday I went up one of the usual hillclimbs we do there and got almost to the top and after hitting a bump my truck stalled and wont start now.

We checked the fuel and it doesnt need to be bled but we cracked the injectors anyway and it still wouldnt start so we tried to tow it up the hill and get it onto flat ground to get a better look at it but we couldnt quite get it up far enough.

So is there anyone that can come out and give me a small winch or even a tow would work fine (if you have decent tyres). Can maybe have a play around the farm as a reward (its a small farm 20 acres or so but there is a few hillclimbs etc) or box of beers or whatever.

Would be great if you had a decent idea about diesels too

Cheers

Caleb

Pulled the Surf upto the road...
Some fuses found blown as a result of a loose battery bouncing around. (something for Caleb to fix :D )
Tried to jump start but jumper leads too light....just got hot...
So Caleb has a battery to charge and hopefully all will be good!!
Nice distraction and a Sunday drive.

Thanks again Calvin, just about to run out the door and have another go at sorting it out.

Your not wrong there Sadam   I have neglected it for so long (didnt have a job for ages) so its all falling apart at the seams at the mo, im slowly getting there as much as my wallet allows

I will get there eventually, meantime i'm learning heaps and im still happy with it....but I can feel the itch for a solid axle and plenty of flex so may be time to start hiding my pennies away

I didn't take any, wasn't a  style recovery.
Just a little drag up a hill onto the flat.
So it was parked up in a better position to work on and wouldn't roll away.
But I did take the camera in case it was

I'm slowly refining the lads repair antics
Truth be known, I would of been the one dragging that Surfs sorry arse up yet another hill if i hadn't used all my 4wd "leave pass" up last weekend and spotted his post early enough.
It's almost time to start thinking about a cheap shitta to run around in and do the Toyota up properly :D

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

What was wrong with my repair jobs before    All jokes aside your help and input has been huge and it is greatly appreciated, I now try and fix things to the best of my knowledge and abilities (never thought that would happen  ).

Yea im trying to do something about a daily heap but am struggling to keep my head above the water at the mo so any spare money gets swallowed fairly instantly.

Ill get there eventually, just got to keep on keeping on.

Anyway a bit of an update on said lemon.

I went back today and chucked a fresh batt into it but it just did the same thing, turned over with no sign of wanting to fire.

So I cracked the injectors again and theres still no fuel coming out.

Im really hoping my diesel pump hasnt shit itself  I dont know anything about the pumps but I thought it may have given some kind of warning before dying rather than just switching off and not wanting to work again.

So once again im at a loss for ideas on what the problem could be.

Iv got my mates 4wd to borrow to get to work in til the weekend so im not in a huge rush but would like to at least identify some causes.

So if you have any ideas feel free to express yourself

Cheers

As you said the battery went west and jumped about under the bonnet and we found some blown fuses, I would check to see if you have power to the fuel cut off solenoid.
Could be a fuse-able link which has gone.
Or a pulled wire.
If no power you can run a wire straight from the battery to it, and crank her over again but to turn off motor you will need to pull the wire off.

I cant see bouncing around doing any damage mechanically.

I did have a look around to make sure everything was plugged in, but didnt have anything on me to test it. Might take the volt meter up with me next time and some spare wire.

Do I just start turning the engine over then place the test wire onto the + or do I connect it to + first then try turn over?

Cheers

Bang on Calvin. Saved me typing it out
Hotwire and test light would help lots.
I'm available after work tomorrow if that helps.

Hey dude,

Cheers for the offer :D Ill try to sort it out myself this time, will save you the hassle of getting your hands dirty on a filthy smurf again

Would I be able to do it with a volt meter? Or should I make up a test light?

Would roll starting it bypass the fuel cut off solenoid? Im guessing no as its gonna be a one way shut off solenoid that needs the correct power supply to open?

Ill give this one my best shot if all else fails then I may have to save up for another bottle of aftermarket water

So I went out and had a play with the truck this arvo.

Got it running with a hotwire, so need to replace whatevers broken.

Will go to bnt tomorrow, do I ask for a fusible link or will it be a popped fuse somewhere?

Cheers

Hey Caleb,

Sorry for the thread jack... Are any of the Nor West guys coming on the Rodney Club Ahuroua Safari in 2 weeks?

I'm keen to meet a few of your club guys and join up as a casual member if you'll have me?

Now that truck is running I want to get out on a few runs. That Pig Farm trip you did looked like a laugh 8)

Good news Caleb..(Just what I thought)
I don't think you can buy fuse-able links over the counter....
I would start checking your wires from the battery.
Then all your fuses, and any relays which might switch the solenoid on / off.
Might be time to find a manual with a wiring diagram.
I am sure there will be something on the net...

One day ill have the knowledge to be able to help people, I cant wait
Bummer, Ill have to go out and check it over tomorrow and fix it friday I think.
Wiring diagram is a good idea, except I think alot of it has been butchered by the old owner, but I shall give it a shot and see where I get too.
At least its fixable
