I have a 1993 Terrano RzM, 2.7l td.
start from the beginning:
in 2008, at 230tkm, the gearbox broke down when shifting out of reverse and into 1st, had all the bearings replaced and the mech left a note on the invoice saying "shaft wear on input centre harding" [sic].
I guess that meant there is wear on the hardening on the input shaft.
unfortunately he did not leave any recommendations on what to do about it.
Gearbox had been a wee bit noisy ever since thru 2nd and 3rd gear. not sure about the other as usually the regular driving noise might drown out the whine.
Last weekend then, going uphill in 3rd in got real noisy, kinda growling grinding. back into 2nd no prob's. It's at 270tkm now.
That night though, after work, it did not want to shift into 4th gear at all, just blocked. no noise, just impossible to shift into.
I can select 4th when the engine is off with a little effort and wiggling the gear stick. It even drives off in 4th then. tried a couple of times and it only slipped out once.
What to do?
Is there any chance it might be something rather simple, like a linkage problem? Or would the box HAVE TO come out in ANY case?
The truck is valued (insured) for 2300.-
So I'm a bit hesitant to spend a potential 1600.- on re-con the gearbox, with 12-15h labour at $65-75/h at a time when I wanted to buy a new car/truck anyway....

Open for any suggestions.....
