Terrano TD27T Compression query

Post by Fusion235 »

Hi

I have a 95 D21 Terrano 2.7TD, just had the injectors redone & cleaned out by diesel specialists in Wellington as car had been putting out more black smoke than usual, so that problem is solved, running really cleanly now however-

They did a compression check for me and one cylinder was low, 3 read between 470-475, and one at 445 being the lowest and lower than normal, they said that its not quite low enough to cause running issues but one of the injectors looked to have got quite hot at some point.

They said that the cylinder compression may possibly even itself out now that the injectors are refreshed & clean with new nozzels etc.

I have noticed on occasion in the morning, only when you start the car and only once for about 2-4 seconds you get 1 misfire or 2, I assume this is due to the low compression on that one cylinder? It did it again this morning, its only for a second then the engine goes normal.

Should I look at having the cylinder head reconditioned or wait and see what happens now that the injectors have been overhauled? Motor has done 154kms, has new glow plugs, new air cleaner & fuel filter and is running gloriously fine in all respects apart from the occasional thumpy cold start.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.!!!!

Personally i would leave it until its get bad enough to be really noticable. And I would of thought it would be worn rings being the cause of lower compression?

I had a terrano that had 360psi on one cylinder, ran rough on start up and had blue smoke. but after about 30seconds it was perfectly fine.

Thanks for that, Could be rings, I guess I am not sure, I get no smoking on start up, just a bit here and there under load as you normally do, so it cant be that bad I guess? Pretty new to diesel engines...

From 475 to 445 is less than the allowed 10% variance. The miss fire when cold could be that or it could be a dopey glow plug. I wouldn't worry about it as it is only for a brief time when cold. As long as it runs sweet within a few seconds it will be fine.

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Hey Sibainmud,

it's been a long time since I've submitted to a post,
but need to ask a Q.

what happens if the miss fire stays longer then 2 to 3 minutes on cold startup? or what is the cause to that when on cold startup it has a whitish greyish smoke coming out of the exhaust ( with the miss fire)???

my engine seemed to do that for a whole week, but it went away for no reason(didn't do nothing to it) did not change the glowplugs, nor refreshed the injectors, or changed the fuel filter or anything to it.

maybe someone can shed some light on the symptoms

regards,
Race
