Maratoto loop
yup
we spoke to the guy that does the track maintenance when we were up there and it was never actually closed
but yes its open and the main track was very good untill there was about 500 club trips up there who made an absolute mess of it and did no hole filling before they left
. the loop is pretty interesting to say the least
see our maratoto thread for pics
i think the gate gets locked over the winter tho.
thats about all i have

Maratoto
I've just found this posting on Maratoto and would like to update it. The Maratoto trail (running off the Wires Rd) is managed by a gate that can be closed at any time if the weather conditions deteriorate. There is a phone message service on 09 5424132 that advises on the status of the gate.
The trail runs on DOC land but is managed with DOC by four wheelers and the maintenance is done through the donations of the users. There is a yellow box on the Wires Rd corner to take your $10 donation per vehicle. It cost $5000 last winter to rebuild some of the trail.
There is a plan to put gates on the "loop" trail to ensure that only suitable vehicles enter and to prevent the number of "rescues" involving the Police over recent years. When the gates are installed a system will be announced for obtaining access.
On both the main trail and the loop it is essential that all vehicles stay on the existing routes and not attempt to "go around" obstacles. The loop has several areas that DOC has concerns about and they are the swampy bits and river entry and exit.

im going to go out on a limb here an maybe propose a repair trip for the main track where it was badly abused, not by us.
near the camp spot. pete knows where i mean.
when we drove in it was primo, very nice track and in great condition,a real credit to those that did all the work and spen many man hours on it,
unfortunatly while we were all in the loop there must have been some serious traffic on the main track which was abused and dug the shit out of
when the whole rear end of my cruiser comes off the ground on the main track you know theres something not right
so heres a trip in the making
have a chat with sef (or was it seth?...cant remember now),run the idea past him and see if hes cool with us having a bit of a fix up on his track, and if so...
travel the main track to the camp spot early in the morning, spend the day digging, carrying rocks, sweating, doing what we can to make the track in that spot at least passable by the average vehicle....and then swimming in the river and a few beers before bed....
does this sound like a good idea ?
just a thought...

There was a soft area exposed by the digger that we anticipated would cut up along the flat to the river on the main trail. It really needs a culvert and side drain cut but for the moment might be helped by several loads of rock. There has not been an inspection by the management team for about 6 weeks but it sounds like one is needed shortly.
I'll check the calendar and look for a possible date for another working bee.

i know the spot your refering to, i think its actually not bad there, there is one spot a bit before that where there is a big plastic pipe across the track which has taken a hammering, massive hole in front of it which i imagine is only getting worse.
the spot i have concerns about is closer to the river(from memory?) heading in to the river it is on the left wheel of the track and is a couple of monster holes next to each other, the right is fine but when the left dissapers ya kinda stop pretty quik
. sing out when the next bee is up there Peter,im sure there are a few of us who would roll up to lend a hand

The Auckland 4wd Club are planning to visit Maratoto on Oct 7 as part of the international clean-up linked to "Adopt a road".
We will be trimming back the vegetation on the first 4km's to allow better vision for the digger when it goes in and to allow good drying of the trail.
Start time is 9.30am at the ford on Wires Rd.
for more info contact me on access@nzfwda.org.nz
