My son has an SJ410 that we are turning into a bush truck. We just hooked up a boat fuel tank and the thing wont run. It turns over ok and fires up but will only run if the key is full on, when released it dies. I have
stripped alot of the wireing out as not needed but im pretty sure all the important stuff is still there. Any ideas much appreciated

Re: SJ410 wont run
when you hold the key on does the starter motor keep turning over?
sounds like you hve the ingnition wiring wired up wrong.

You can come and check my SJ410 out if you wish - you may be able to spot what you haven't connected correctly.
Are you coming out for a play on Sunday?

Re: SJ410 wont run
It probably had a ballast resistor on the coil . Ie the coil is 9ish volts , when cranking power straight to the coil , as the starter is taking most of the grunt ( ie volts ) . Once key let go power goes to the ballast resistor , dropping voltage , then to the coil .
Hope that makes sense , box of beers thats the problem . Either you stripped it out or its broken in half .
Cheers

Yep like Chris says,
the ballast resister should be hanging off the side of the coil or sometimes they use a resistance wire to feed the coil
When Ign is on the coil is fed voltage via the ballast resister, when the key is turned onto the starter the ballast is bypassed and the coil is fed the full battery voltage to allow for the voltage drop while the starter is turning over, sounds like your coil is only being fed voltage on the bypass when your activating the starter
