Cryogenic Freezing in ChCh... Stronger CV's, Gears etc

Post by kbjj »

Dropped my axels, cvs and hub gears (13kg) off earlier this week to get cryogenically frozen. The Gearbox Company, 98 Falsgrave Street does this for $20 per kilogram. Alot of people speak highly of this treatment for gearbox components to engine componets etc. Is said that it can strengthen up to 3 times original. Basically it aligns the molecular structure of the material.
The reason I'm pushing this, is the moment they have 50kg to be treated, the sooner I get my stuff back. Not to badly priced either.

I didn't know that  so I could take my spare cv's and axles in and get them done and they would be stronger?

At the mo the cv's are pre packed with grease so they would have to be cleaned first correct?

Yep, everything I've read about it seems good in theory and testing.
http://www.metalravne.com/selector/heat_treatment/cryogenic_treatment.html Just an example, plenty more info out there.
Clean the cv's and dismantle them, which will elimanate the risk of loss of clearance during freezing, which I guess may cause stress. Parts can be left in plastic bags to keep them together.
I was led to believe The Gearbox Company is the only South Island outfit doing this.

Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.
