Just been reading this thread and this looks alot easier than putting a hole thru the frame

What year/model Hilux steering box and pump did you use

power steer box and pump off an IFS surf which are (as far as im aware) all the same. say an LN61 as they are cheap and easy to get hold of :wink:

im actually thinking of trying a box off a safari as im wanting more power out of the box to turn the 36" pedes with the locker in the front with the hulking great 2f sitting on top of it....having said that the surf box still does the job ok and has'nt broken yet so must be strong enough as i have tested its integrety on some fairly tough terrain :twisted:

sing out if you want any more detailed info :wink:

thats a good question..... im gonna have to have a think about that, leave it with me for a bit, ill go sit by my missile and ponder it and see if it would. get back to you about that

How hard do you reckon it would be to put Safari power steering into a 40?

I bought a power steering unit (complete) of trademe that aparently is factory FJ40 but the mounts are all wrong for my truck??? Almost looks like it might be off a FJ45.

Long story short - Would it be better to just go straight to Safari power steer?

i would imagine that using the 45 power steer would be easier bro.im only thinking about the safari box at the mo, still need to do a bitt of research to see if it will work.....means i have to get off my lazy ass and finish the ute propperly.. :roll:

after thinking about using the surf setup on a SUA truck i think it would be sweet as long as you got your clearances right when you mount it to the chassis,check with suspension compressed etc

i think its all in the thread mate, powersteer and disk brakes in the same hit

basikly ....put the box up on the chassis, see where it needs to be,clamp it,drill holes,put crush tubes in the chassis and bolt it up,plumb the pump to it,modify the steering collumn shaft to run through the battery box(cut holes etc) mate it to the box.....and bobs me uncle power steering

thats it in a nut shell...pretty much :wink:

ohh and you have to do a bit of shagging round with the steering link rod, either put your cruiser pitman arm on the surf box and go that way or make up a new steering link using surf link arm cut off and spun down and threaded to make a sort of tie rod end into your steering link.... long story really..... hard to explane...best to lokk at the finished product or pictures :wink:

i ended up using an 80 series arm,see if you can get a 70 or 80 series arm dude, they are much flatter than the 60 :wink:

the 80 series has a wierd curve in it but its pretty flat like the 70 series one.

will stick a comparison photo up for you if you like ? 60 - 70

Yeah got to do that for sure. I`m thinking I might have to get another set of those 15x10 mangels from you at some stage... Just been spending all my time on Renovation at the moment

New garage for cruiser project so we can spend some quality time together

(me and the cruiser that is.

Will have to catch up soon. Let me know if you see a 80 series pitman arm lying around :wink:
