I have a 24v winch and was wondering whats the best way to address this problem.
Can i run 2 extra batteries i.e. 24v then when wanting to winch just isolate those the 24v system with a switch?
Its a toyota high mount winch off a crusier, if it was any other winch i would not worry, but this winch are quite good.
Other option is to just sell it. If you are interested let em know.
Thanks Lawrence

Re: 24v winch in 12v truck
Best way is to run a separate 24v alternator with it's own two batteries.
Re: 24v winch in 12v truck
What would be the best alternator to use? 24v crusier one?
Its on a 3L deisel motor, with no AC pump so this would be the ideal spot to run it.

Re: 24v winch in 12v truck
I have done a similar thing with a yacht water-jet powered bow thruster. i built a solenoid pack that latches 2 batteries together on demand and when not in use they are both charged with the 12 volt alt. Mind you the alternator was 150 amp with a smart regulator
Probably best to build a stand alone 24 volt system.
Cheers,

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
Re: 24v winch in 12v truck
Yea, i think id strugle to get a hilux alternator which is 150 amps lol
A stand alone 24v system sounds like the go, it will still not be a cheap conversion, by the time a mount is made for new 24v alternator, 2 new batterys. and finding a spot to fit 2 new batteries. Id say t would be best to fit them in the ute tray.
I just picked up the high mount winch, and shit it ways half a TON!!!

i might be keen to buy for my cruiser, what you wanting for it?
Re: 24v winch in 12v truck
From what i can tell they are worth around 1k.
The one i have has roller and full drum of un-used wire.
I just read on another thread that when Mr. T fitted them to new trucks they cost $3500 USD, glad im not the one paying that much lol

Re: 24v winch in 12v truck
bump. Anyone else do something similar?
Re: 24v winch in 12v truck
We just use a basic bosch 24v alternator (80 amp I think?) - work's great with two 850cca batteries for our twin motor toyota high mount winch, never had any issues.
Remember that twice the voltage means half the amperage, so you can think of a 24v 80amp alternator to be like a 12v 160amp.
