excessive intake noise?

I have a 2.8d turbo and i snapped the timing belt while idling along due to mud getting in behind the cover, I took the chance and put a new belt in. fires up 1st time with no smoke, runs good but its hugly noisy out the snorkel, especially at high revs. Does this sound like the timing out or just some internal damage. Still goes hard but maybe slightly down on power, had a afternoon run out at the river and never missed a beat.

any ideas out there?

If the noise wasn't there before I would say bent valves, damaged camshaft pedestals or cam timing out. FITZY.

definitly wasnt this bad before, i thought if it was internal damage the power would be well down, still spun the wheels in the mud, crossed rivers and revved right out with no problems. a big loud tractor springs to mind, but all the noise is out the snorkel?

You will be a tooth out on your timing belt, been there and done that, mine sounded like a tractor too.

Reset the timing belt as per the manual, everything lines up perfect on the diesel pump, crank, and cam. aswell as all the lines on the belt. But still a tractor noise? is it definitly a timing issue?

Im thinking valve train damage. i would do a compression test but diesel compression testers are expensive. Is the top end noisier at all. as in big tappet clearance from bent valves not fully closing. maybe take tappet cover off and check clearances. should be able to do that as you have the book. tho if valves are not full closeing it must be very minor as it is still running ok
you do have the air filter in the box. that would do it, lol

running a snorkel off the turbo witha pod filter on the end, sounds normal under idle but just a bit deeper, once you rev it up it gets louder and louder untill its screaming when it gets to the redline, had the snorkel come out just above the passenger side roll cage but way to noisy to drive without earmuffs... theres no missing or exhaust smoke or rough idling, starts first click aswell?.
Only a bush truck so will proberally just drive it like it is... did 20-30kms last week at the river and didnt miss a beat (had to extend the air intake out the back of the truck tho)

had a pod on mine for over a year and it wasnt that loud, only since iv snapped / changed the timing belt. unbearable if u are sitting next to it.

interference means if the cam belt breaks the piston meets the valve for a not too gentle introduction

hi, through some investigations i was told that sometimes if the tapetts are too tight it can cause excessive noise out the intake, but not the cause of my problem.

the cause of my problem maybe one of the valves isnt seating properally, not enough to make it miss but will burn out the valve. so my option is to strip it down and fix but could enter into the mid hundreds by the time its finished. Only a mud / river truck so goina beat it till it dies....
