Best Insurance Companys for modified 4wd's

Post by surf lux »

Hi all, have had a browse through this section but as far as I can see
no one has covered this yet? Just wondering what insurance company people would recommend as the main one's State,Ami etc don't seem interested in having a bar of insuring modified 4wd's.
Wanting to insure a hilux d/cab lifted on 35's,1kzte motor fitted along with a few other bits n pieces have been a customer of state for 12 years but when I rang to insure they said they wouldn't touch it so just wondering what other options are out there for people like us ??

Note that Barleys are NOT an Insurance company but are an Underwriter or Broker, that has a Scheme with an Insurer, they have there own policy wording
and exclusions, they are great to deal with but still need to work with the Insurer.
you will deal with a Company assessor for the Insurance company, that holds the scheme.
just a bit of info.

State, NZI, BNZ, ASB, IAG all have the same guidelines for modified vehicle's and they will cover it if the modifications are less than 25% of the total value of the vehicle.

doesn't take long to get over that threshold in a 4x4 an old hilux with tyres and suspension mods would not qualify for that
my 4wd is not a truck

I found them pretty good covering all offroad stuff except where you have water damage thats not accidental so be aware when playing in the river etc. Rates are about $587 for a value of $0000 to $15000.00. They seem to have this rate as there min. Haven,t made a claim yet but seem ok. Cheers

Barley policy doesn't cover non registered trucks.

I've used JRI - they have a competition vehicle cover, restoration cover, and classic car cover all of which are priced really well.

Main things for me where agreed value cover and first right to buy the wreck back.

yeah Barley uses Lumley General who i have had to deal with before after I T-Boned a taxi. It was his fault and the assessor for Lumley went out to the panel beater and even though the repairs were what my truck was insured for back then, he allowed them to go through with the repairs.

I hold an insurance policy through Barley insurance for my vehicle which isn't registered or warranted, it's competition type policy where the vehicle is insured for theft, fire, damage, from my home or storage, or from trailer etc when camping, also insured when trailering around the policy cover finishes when i'm behind the steering wheel, cost is about $300 for a year of 13G cover.

My Bad, perhaps that was just the one 4x4 policy document I had with them at the time in 2009 (sure they have others and things change over time).

Just pointed this out as the actual policy document (not the premium summary) Barleys provided me when requested stated in bold that it did not cover non registered vehicles.

I dont get how this insurance shit works

for years I had my flatdeck cruiser insured with Lumley, the policy included all the modifications to the vehicle and included "offroad use" in writing and had an generic excess of "$250" I thought it was a good policy and didnt have any problems with them :D

Image

I cancelled that policy 2 years ago when I changed brokers and opted not to keep the cover up while the truck was going under resto and I had just brought my 40 series cruiser so I went to my broker to get that insured and he mucked about for a few weeks and turned around and said he cant get any offroad insurance for me no insurers will cover offroad insurance anymore and as it was just on xmas I told him to work out the best policy he could find and the best one of the lot was one back with Lumley but this time it stated "No offroad Cover", the excess was the same at $250 but the excess for theft was $1500 or reduced to $750 if I get some special alarm installed by some special installer  so I signed up the policy just to get the thing covered and told my broker we'll re-visit it again when its up for renewal.

Image

It was due for renewal in January and I just got off my arse and emailed that joker from Barley that does the NZ4WD Ass stuff and he rang me back within about 20 mins and then emailed me all the shit to insure my truck and it came out less than $2 difference than the policy Lumley was giving me and I now get offroad cover (excluding water ingestation in the engine), excess of $250 not $750 or $1500 if someone pinches it, it includes vehicle recovery, storage and loan vehicle up to a month or something like that that I wasnt getting and his policy is through Lumley as well.... why for the same money do they tell me to get farked in one policy and in the other policy say I can have everything I want?

yes it does say OFF ROAD cover but this still has its term and conditions.
I have a policy through Lumley and cost is the same as per Barley broker
most insurers have gone away from this type of cover as the risk has increased to a stage were it is not econonical policy.
I f some of these underwriten schemes start becoming a money pit ,
the backers will pull out and make some other scheme to make money.
Have seen a few claims declined, so read your policy and read again
to the insurers its all facts and figures.

ps there are a fair few Insurance industry workers on this site too.

I'm going through the same battle at the moment, have tried Barley but they say I need to be part of a 4wd club. Other than insuring through someone like NAC and their massive excess etc I can't get insurance. I've been driving for almost 9 years without a claim, traffic infringment or anthing and no one wants to go near me. Not really keen to go 3rd party. Anybody know of anyone else thats worth trying for insurance? Cheers.

I've been happy with my cover through AMI. Specifies offroad cover and they had no hesitation approving claims - 2 x windscreens and then wrote off the FJ40. Re-insured the Safari replacement with no hesitation.

I have tried AMI, but they said they wouldn't cover a modified vehicle(its only a prado with a few bits and peices bolted on) . Might have to go into a branch and talk to some real people.

i had the same with another insurer. the underwriter will not insure anything with mods worth more than 25% of vehicle cost. thats a bit of a problem for work vehicles.

i'm surprised AMI would insure it at all. especially ofter the tv coverage about their insurance specifically excludes any activity off a formed road.
