Looks real good not sure why you filled the holes in the floor as I went for a run down a river in a 90 and I think the river went for a run in the Landrover! Man did the water flow freely into and out of it :lol:

Love the radiator shroud that is some mighty fine sheet metal work. Now if only I could do something that nice......

Yes I had a look at that but there are more of them in the Hutt valley - so he could be there

As I recall, it was a guy who I suspect is an auto-sparky offering advice on how to mount your coil... thats not negative feedback, thats just someone offering good advice. Learn to take it... when you post a project people will always offer their opinion... thats the point. Couldn't agree more - & surely someone must know him - he's obviously into his Landies & most other people know these sort of guys(& generally avoid them :twisted:

I beleive he drives/drove a 1987 Rangy - that's what he claimed the locker was from. Any & all help appreciated

Ive been stung twice on TM now. Once I bought a Zuk Flatdeck sight unseen as seller was adament there was no structural rust... Huge phuckin hole in firewall and fuel tank mounts rusted through... Second was a Discovery I bought for spares last month. Guy again adament the axle housing were straight......... RR end of axles housing well pushed back :evil:

Ok - Back to the build - Things are starting to progress again - 2 weekends ago........
Welded the new shock mount onto the rear axle, made up new brake lines & bled the system.

& a close-up of the new shock mount & disc brakes

Next up I wired up the battery so it now sits in the back (box under passengers seat no longer accessable due to new seat mounts). Tidied the shed & took it for a test drive

It was the first time it's been out the shed for 12 months now so was very excited. Managed to drive at least 1km before it konked out - rebuilt the dizzy & away we went again - certainly pulls alot better than I remember & stops well too (always a bonus :!:

) Unfortunately ran into a problem - the points keep closing up :evil:

which pissed us off somewhat. So after resetting them 3 or 4 times the call was made -"new dizzy" ....................... those who have good memories may reall that we fitted the motor we noticed that the frontend was from an older Buick motor & the dizzy oil pump drive is different - these are becoming tricky to find (esp as I'd like to switch to a Mallory twin point) so time to rebuild the front-end.

Off came the water pump & timing cover etc, new (2nd hand) one turns up but there's a problem :roll:

the oil pump dosn't turn freely - but looks like it's been rebuilt recently - took it apart & found the gears grinding on the cover ....... had been rebuilt without a proper gasket & this was enough to cause the gears to foul :roll:

So used the gasket & cover from the Buick (exactly the same but the gears were smallerby 5-6mm) & good as gold - hopefully abit more oil pressure now too. Unable to put timing cover back on as no gasket for that (far too fiddly to try & make - & not flat enough surfaces to get away with master gasket). Only one thing to do when you can't continue .............. have a beer & go fishing ............... got a bloody good feed of scallops

Don't fit a mallory, fit an HEI. No points, housings, or cam lobes to wear.
The fatter and more accurate spark will make a new motor of it.
I have seen several of these done and they work out a cheap mod.
The other thing to do with worn oil pump housings/ front covers graft the lower half of a commo V6 cover on to the rover housing leaving the rover
waterpump. This gives a modern pump with available parts

Can you eleborate on this HEI please Jtop, I would like to go eletronic ignition and do away with points on my rover 8. I gave up with points when i had minis! Is this HEI the brand? or the generic term? definitly sounds like me.

Whilst I'm sure the HEI or any electronic dizzy is good don't knock the Mallory too much. Neils been running one in the rally truck for 3 years & it has NEVER missed a beat - no maintainace done on it in this time either!!!!! Also cost is always a factor - there seem to quite a few Mallorys around from the stock car boys so I'll probably still go that way.

I've fitted a "Pertronics" electronic ignition system to Rangielux

. It's magnetic rather than optical (good for water and crap) 10 mins to fit and I run a high output Bosch coil with it. It can be used with the standard ballist system if you wish too. Was screaming up a track with two deep ruts hard out at Rere the other day, looked down at the tacho, 5,500rpm all the way no probs

The mallory dists are good - I wouldn't say no to one. They may resist condensation under the cap better than std rover too ?

Thanks - yeh I've got a set or 34" Swampers to put on it for playing & we'll stick a set of Baja Claws (35x12.5R15) on Beadlocked rims on for any comps we do.

I had a non vacc twin point......(!@*^$%#@!#$^)

now I have electronic ignition.........oh, the non-f@#*in' around with it!!!

What sort of axles are you running?
Looking at the previous page where you show a pic of the new rear end just fitted it looks to me like you have got 10 spline axles in there.
Surely you are going to (or have already changed) these if fitting a locker and 34" tyres.
Interested in seeing what other people are using for axles and their thoughts / experiences on these as I myself am a little undecided on how to improve this LR weak link.

Yep you're right - standard 10 spline & that's the way they're staying. Again relying n experience from the rally truck - have been running standard axles with 35's for 2 national seasons now & broken only 1 in that time. It's all about how you drive - if you go balls out all the time something gonna break whatever you drive.

This is probably too late but I read in a nz4wd mag that you can get new "factory" LR diesel motors, not made by LR but made under licence by ????

Sorry Furgus, point taken Rangielux, excellent truck and good work being done.
Mike, an HEI is a GM electronic distributor, Chev, Buick, Olds etc and whilst your twin point will run a 28 thou plug gap the HEI will run 45 to 60 thou which gives you an idea of the output.

Theres one on my truck and I'd never go back to mucking around with points again, the coil mounts into the top of the cap

Hows the project going Furg, all certed and on the road yet?
Did you end up putting some decent headers on the motor, and how are the SU's near water?
Found on my V8 that the SU's iced up anywhere near water due to small breathers on carby's, have overcome the problem but wonder if anyone else has had this issue?
Good to see you making a nice job of the conversion with some good kiwi backyard manufacturing going on.
Congrats on the new addition to the family, should give you some sleep deprivation amongst other things for a while.

Yesterday went out to the shed for the first time in ages, took with me a brand new Mallory twin point dizzy bought off TradeMe.

Now thoseof you who have keeping up with this thread over the last year will know that I've had a few issues with dizzies & the front end of the motor .......... well the fun continued .......... the oil pump drive on this dizzy was an early (Buick) type ........ and we just switched to a later front end & oil pump b$%*&r. Now at this point I was about to cry but Neil has a cunning plan, so 20 mins later the brand new dizzy has been attacked with an angle grinder & a drill & a new oil drive is fitted

Points are sorted & lined up & vacuum attached chuck it in the hole, bolt it up ..........FIRE IN THE HOLD............ Yes it runs again.

So what's left to do under the hood :?:

Air cleaner required. Made up a couple of brackets off the gearbox and bingo a filter is in place & the snorkle hoses connected up.

So off for a test drive ....... back to my house seems OK ...... needs a tune up but I'm a happy camper again & so was my boy................

Lots more to do before cert but at least it drives!!!!!!!!
