I'm not condoning going somewhere you shouldn't, but:

Considering our airforce hardly exists, hasn't had any aircraft cabale of dropping bombs and missles for nearly a decade and our army can't afford to travel that far north of Waiouru, there's zero risk of becoming target practice

If you were unfortunate enough to come accros any bombs that somehow didn't explode on impact after being dropped a few thousand feet from an aircraft, but are still somehow armed and deadly after 10 years of exposure to the harsh salty environment, shifting sands and general decay, then you would have to be the unluckiest bastard alive.

Go figure

The army regularly find unexploded ordinance up there and create some decent size craters disposing of them

They are also in their quite often training, if they come across you they generally ask you to leave immediately and follow you out to make sure you dont backtrack.

They have signs at the main entrance to the beach, on the Rimmer road turn off, just past Parakai and at the intersection of wilson road track and inland road just a couple of minutes before you hit the beach. Anybody who doesn't see these signs is stupid.

When the range is active (they are there) the flags will be out but in saying that they aren't all that reliable, I've gone up there for a sunday cruise with no flags out and they have been there. Sometimes they go there when they aren't supposed to.

The best thing to do is just stay away full stop, even though I know how safe the place is and have spent quite a lot of time there in the past it's best the general public stay away.

You can drive up north to the Wilson road exit, just under 14km from Rimmers. That's the best 4wd exit, and a nice way to end the trip at Lake Kareta. Wilson is also a legal road, before anyone gets the wrong idea

Yeah mate ... bring the mud :)

Meet 8.45am ready to leave by 9am on Coast Road, Muriwai. (at the little horse area carpark about 1km down coast road) head up beach, go for play on 4wd track, drive down beach, back to carpark by 1pm.

I know most people will know it but: bring a spade and a rope, and if you dont have rated tow hooks at least pull your tow ball off so we can put a shackle through the hole.

yeah about 1 km past where it turns to gravel. all the way to end of golf course, and just before you turn a 90 degree left corner.
